Mitch Jacobson : Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (BE(Hons))
A love of rugby has paved the way for Mitchell Jacobson’s Hillary Scholarship this year. The former Cambridge High School student is studying for a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical). He says he has always enjoyed rugby, which he started playing when he was four years old. In 2012 and 2013, he was the 1st XV captain at Cambridge High School. Playing the sport with his mates and the physical challenges of the training are what he enjoys most about it. In season, Mitchell trains up to nine times a week. He has represented New Zealand at a secondary schools level against Fiji and Australia, played in the Barbarians in year 12 taking on Australia and Samoa, and was selected for the Chiefs U18 squad playing the Blues. Captaining the New Zealand Secondary Schools team that beat Australia, and being one of six year 12’s selected in the New Zealand Barbarians team have been two of the highlights of Mitchell’s rugby career so far. In the future he would love to be selected for squads such as the New Zealand U20s or the Waikato ITM cup, which he sees as stepping stones towards Super 15 and All Blacks rugby.
