Scott Calder
Scott is a 2nd year student from Cambridge High School, this is his 2nd year of a Bachelor of Management Studies. Last year Scott was the Waikato
Junior Champion in Squash and 1st in the Waikato U19 Champs. This year
Scott is working towards making the Waikato Senior Squash Squad and achieve an A grade
average in his studies. He is also a golden key recipient.
Thomas Malcolm - Rotorua
Thomas is new to the University for 2005, he was Head Boy of Western
Heights High School in 2004. Thomas excels at Volleyball and recently
returned from the Youth Olympics in Sydney where he led the NZ team to
a bronze medal. He is studying towards a Bachelor of Science and Technology.
Simon Addison - Putaruru
Simon has recently been named in the NZ team to compete in the Orienteering
Junior Worlds in July this year. Simon holds the most NZ Secondary School
Titles ever and in the last eight years has won 7 NZ Lon Distance Championships for his agegroups. An achilles injury in 2004 is now in the past and this year at the National Championships he was placed 2nd in the Sprint Distance, 1st in the Middle Distance and 1st in the Long Distance (main race). Simon
is currently in his 3rd year in a Science degree majoring in Chemistry.
Graeme Aldridge - Hamilton
Graeme is studying to become a Primary School Teacher which he will complete midway through the year. He has recently become the most successful
one day bowler in State Shield History taking 30 wickets for the Northern
Knights including a dominant display in the final. He has been a Northern
District Rep for 7 years and hopes to push on to play for the Black Caps
in the future.
Craig Armstrong - Waiuku
Craig is a member of the Midlands Mens Hockey Squad which competes
in the New Zealand national champs. He is also involved in the Fraser Tech Hockey Club where he plays in the premier team and coaches the reserve womens team. He is currently studying towards
his Master of Science in Mathematics. Craig aims to apply for the Rhodes Scholarship later this year so he can start his PhD at Oxford in 2007.
Dean
Armstrong - Waiuku
Dean is a PhD student with the Computer Science Department at the
University of Waikato, the title of his thesis is 'Wireless Wide Area
Network Protocols'. Dean is heavily involved with the University Hockey
Club, he is the Mens club captain and goal keeper and he also finds the
time to coach a female University team. He has represented the NZ indoor
hockey team and hopes to break in the national squad in the future as
well as complete his PhD in 2006.
Laurelle Borck - Taumarunui
Laurelle is a current student at the University of Waikato studying towards a Graduate Diploma of Secondary School Teaching, in the subject areas of junior and senior Physical Education and Health. Laurelle graduated from the Bachelor of Sport and Leisure Studies last year. She is currently a training partner for the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic and member of the Magic Development side. Laurelle has represented New Zealand and Waikato at the U21 level and Waikato in the National Bank Cup competition and NPC.
Anna
Bourke - Rotorua
Anna has completed a Bachelor of Sport and Leisure
Studies degree and now is doing the one year graduate diploma in Secondary Teaching.. She came to the Waikato University from Western Heights
High School. Anna is passionate about dance, she participates in a variety
of forms such as American Jazz Ballet, contemporary and Hip Hop. She
aims to teach dance in our High Schools, perform and organize local performances
as she believes dance is a way in which we can bring people together.
Stacey Brannigan - Rotorua
Stacey is currently in her 3rd year studying a Bachelor of Sport and Leisure and Bachelor of Teaching conjointly. She is a member of the Midlands U21 Hockey Team and Midlands Womens National Hockey League (NHL) Team. She was recently named "Player of the Year" for the Waikato Premier Womens Club Competition and joint "Player of the Year" for the Midlands Womens NHL Team. She was also "Top Goal Scorer" for the Varsity Womens Premier Hockey Team. In the future she aims to be a PE Teacher and make the Blacksticks NZ Womens Hockey Team.
Mark Burman
Mark is a rugby playing, volunteer lifeguard. Last year Mark made his NPC debut for Waikato and subsequently 6 caps throughout the season. He is in his 4th year of his Management degree and is a member of the Golden Key International Honours Society, which means he is
in the top 15% of University students. He is also a leader within the
community and a name to watch out for in the future.
Jamie Carroll - Rotorua
Jamie is a new student for 2005, he comes from Rotorua and aims to
complete a Bachelor of Sports and Leisure to eventually become a PE Teacher.
Jamie also plays Hockey and last year was a Bay of Plenty U18 Rep. While
at school Jamie was the captain of his first 11 team and captain of various
Bay of Plenty age group teams.
Natalie Curtis
Natalie is the current World DTL Shooting Champion. At the World Champs
Natalie was the highest scorer out of all of the New Zealand competitors. Last
year she was the University of Waikato's Sports Women of the year and
also capped off a brilliant year by being named as Waikato's Junior
Sports Woman of the year. Natalie is in her second year of study towards
a Bachelor of Science. Natalie started shooting in 1999 and has dominanted
the shooting scene since. Natalie started shooting because she saw
it as a challenge, it looked interesting and was something different
to the norm.
Andrea Dance
Andrea is in her final year of a Bachelor of Teaching degree. She has
represented New Zealand in Touch for a number of years. Andrea is also
a member of the Universities Golden Key society, which means she is
in the top 15% of University students. Andrea has been involved with
coaching touch and netball teams in the past few years also.
Paul Duynhoven - New Plymouth
Paul has been frustrated with injury concerns being unable to fulfil his potential. His injuries seem to be responding to rehabilitation and he will hopefully be in full training soon, aiming for the 2006/7 athletics season. He has however made excellent academic progress, topping 3 papers in 2004 and 2 papers in 2005 and attained A+s. He continues in his 3rd year of a Bachelor of Management Studies.
Sarah
Gibbs - Auckland
Sarah is a member of the NZ Women's Elite Soccer Squad and member
of the Soccer 2 Team that competes in the Women's National League. Sarah's
long term goal is to maintain her soccer form to be involved in the 2007
Olympic and World Cup campaign. She also aims to complete her Bachelor
of Law and go on to graduate with first class honours.
Thomas Greensill
Since enrolling in a Bachelor of Electronic Commerce degree Tame has
managed to gain selection to national and provincial touch teams, maintain
excellent academic grades and acts as a positive role model to students
in his role as a residential assistant at Student Village. He is considering
coming back to the University to pursue graduate study.
Hayley Gould - New Plymouth
Hayley is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Computer and Graphic
design, she is a successful Athletics Champ and Regional Netball Rep.
Hayley is running with the Hamilton Hawks club and recently came first
in the 400m hurdles at the Athletics Grand Prix Meet in Hastings. Haley's
athletic training helps her fitness for her winter pursuit, Netball.
She was a member of the Western flyers Development Squad and Waikato
U19 Team last year. She trains six days a week to reach her goal of becoming
a NZ Athletics Rep and member of the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic.
Paul Hartley - Hamilton
Paul is in his second year of Uni, he is a coxswain for Rowing New
Zealand's Academy, Waikato Rowing club and Waikato University Rowing
Club. He is studying towards a Bachelor of Sport and Leisure Studies.
Callum Hall - Auckland
Callum previously was at Auckland University but has decided to attend
Waikato this year to study towards a Bachelor of Music. Callum is a talented
student who has been learning music since the age of 4 hence he has a
lot of experience in solo, chamber and orchestral performance for both
the cello and piano. Callum intends to continue his cello and piano performance
studies onto graduate level.
Chelsey Hawthorne - Ohaupo
Chelsey is a 20 year old Equestrian who competes primarily in Eventing. Chelsey competes at Advanced level on her best horse "Look at That". The pair have had a very successful career to date winning and being placed in numerous Advanced classes around New Zealand, including Runner Up at the World Cup Qualifier at Kihikihi and the Puhinui International Three Day Event. They were also New Zealand Young Rider Champions in Wellington in 2003 and again in 2004 at Puhinui. The pair won the New Zeland Advanced Leaderboard for both the rider and combination. Chelsey is a member of the New Zealand Development Squad and was long listed for the New Zealand Trans Tasman team 2005. Chelsey is currently in her third year of a Bachelor of Management Studies majoring in Finance and Human Resource Management.
Tennille Hill
Tennille is in her first year studying towards a Bachelor of Management.
Last year she represented New Zealand at Touch and Waikato at Netball.
As a result of her sporting success in 2004 she was nominated for the
Waikato Junior Sportswoman of the Year. This year she has represented
Waikato at U21 level in Netball and is currently training with the
NPC Squad.
Sarah Ho - Hamilton
2006 has started in excellent fashion for Sarah with her selection in the NZ Womens team for the World Teams Championships in Germany in April. In addition Sarah is a strong candidate for selection for the Oceania Championships and has another busy study year purusing a degree in Law and Social Science.
Kwon Jin - Rotorua
This is Kwon's second year studying towards a Bachelor of Music (Piano) and his second year on the Hillary Scholarship Programme. Kwon's mother first taught him the piano at the age of three years. He immigrated to New Zealand with his family when he was eleven. Kwon sat the Trinity
College Music Grade of 'First Concert Certificate Solo Piano' in 2001 and Grade 8 in 2003 for the Trinity College Music Exam and received
the highest marks in New Zealand. He has also won four 1st prizes and the Barber Cup Scholarship in 2004. Kwon commenced his study at the University of Waikato at the age of 16. This year he will be entering seven national competitions and will also be challenging for the Young Musican of the Year Award for 2006. Following his completion of a BMus Kwon would like to study further in Moscow, Paris, Berlin or Royal (London) Conservatory for Master and PhD degrees.
Bernard Law
Bernard is heavily involved in Water Polo as a player, coach and
referee. He currently competes in the National Senior Mens League and
last year coached his St Johns junior team to the Waikato Secondary Schools
title. He is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Arts and aims to
finish the year with an A grade average.
Jeremy
Mayall - Hamilton
Jeremy's Symphony No.1 was selected in 2005 to be part of the NZ
Symphony Orchestra rehearsed reading workshop held in Wellington. It
was only one of five pieces selected and received media coverage on national
radio and TV1. He is currently studying for his Masters in Music and
aims to continue his recent successes by writing pieces for local and
national productions.
Sam Messam - Rotorua
Sam is member of the Waikato Football Club, which is currently competing
in the National League. Sam has been playing soccer since he was five,
which led him to his current study of choice, a Bachelor of Sport and
Leisure.
Natalie McKelvey - Hamilton
Natalie is a drummer in a local band called The Shrugs, who released
an album last year and are currently working on another. Natalie has
been playing for about 10years and has always wanted to be a musician.
She is currently studying towards a Honours in Screen and Media Studies.
Charlotte McCullough - Temuka
Charlotte is returning to the University of Waikato for her second year of study towards a Bachelor of Sport and Leisure studies. Charlotte
played hockey for South Canterbury for 3 years and also
completed the start of her coaching certificates. She also played for the Midlands U21 and Waikato Womens in 2005. Charlotte aims to reach
further honours at Waikato and believes the scholarship will assist her.
Sasha McLaren - Hamilton
Sasha is studying towards Honours in Screen and Media Studies and
last year was a finalist in the Shootout Film Competition. Sasha wants
to create short film scripts and other film projects for the Waikato
area.
Aaron Scott
Aaron comes from Hamilton Boys High School and is studying towards
a Bachelor of Sport and Leisure Studies. Last year he was a member of
the NZ secondary Schools Soccer team and NZ U20 Academy. He is also a
member of the Waikato Football Club Team that competes in the National
Championship.
Trudy Stuart - Tauranga
Trudy is new to the University for 2005 and is intending on studying
towards a Bachelor of Management and a Bachelor of Law. Last year Trudy
represented the NZ Junior Rowing team at the World Champs and aims to
continue her success in Rowing in the future.
Belinda Taurua-Hill - Whangarei
Belinda is studying towards a Bachelor of Social Sciences. Belinda
is a member of the National U19 Badminton Squad where she competed in
the 2004 Youth Commonwealth team and is also a member of the National
Badminton Reserve Squad. She hopes to continue her successes and represent
NZ at senior international level.
Amy Tyrrell - Tokoroa
Artistic Roller Skating is comprised of three disciplines which are
figures, freestyle and dance. Amy focuses mainly on figures where she
competes nationally and internationally. Amy is currently ranked 2nd
in New Zealand, 2nd in the Oceania region and 23rd in the Senior Ladies
Figures. She is studying towards a Bachelor of Management Studies majoring
in Accounting.
James
Gill - Hamilton
Currently Studying towards a BMS and in his 3rd year. Works part
time as a kitchen hand/barman. 2004 NZ University Champion, Captain 2003
U18 NZ Golf Team, 2005 - selected in NZ Senior Team to play in Lake Macquarie
Amateur Tournament, NSW Amateur Tournament, Tasmania Open and the Australia
Amateur Tournament early in the year.
Tanya Wakefield - Hamilton
Tanya is a member of the Claudelands Rover's Womens Northern League team and also plays in the Womens Force Three National league
team. She has completed her Bachelor of Sport and Leisure degree and is currently in the Honours programme for Sport and Leisure. In completing this, she hopes to be a Sports Event Manager overseas.
Sarah
Devoy - Hamilton
Currently studying towards a Master of Science, a/a+ student. Works
as a part time merchandiser in the hamilton area. 2004 5th place in Open
Womens NZ mountain running champs. 2003 - 3rd place Open Womens NZ mountain
running champs, 31st in Open Womens World mountain Running Trophy.
Ben Gilby-Todd
Ben is in his third year studying towards a Bachelor of Management at
the University of Waikato coming to us from Ngaruawahia High School.
He plays hockey for the Suburbs Hockey Club and has been a member of
the Midlands U21 in 2004 and 2005. He was involved in 2005 NHL squad and would be keen to play for them again. Ben started playing at primary school
and once he started playing he was hooked. He hopes to continue playing
hockey and represent his county. As well as his sporting goals he hopes
to achieve academically and graduate with Honours.
Kimberley Lewis - Hamilton
Currently studying towards a Bachelor of Sport and Leisure Studies.
Current member of NZ senior womens soccer squad and nz universities womens
team.
Jisun Kim
Jisun has been playing the Cello she was about 11 years old which by
her own admissions is a late start. Jisun loves the full rich sound
of the Cello and hopes to teach the instrument to others in the future.
Jisun believes its not about how much time you spend practicing the
Cello but its about quality, you need to listen to the sound you are
making and refine it. Recently, Jisun has been focusing on her chamber
music for Cello and she has excelled at it and in 2005 was chosen to
play at the high achiever's concert for the royal schools grade exam
in performance music.
Peter Shand
Peter Shand is planning on completing his degree in Computer Graphic
Design this year and is considering returning to pursue further study.
Not only does Peter excel in Computer Graphic Design but he manages
to find time to play the piano, bass guitar and saxophone.
Paula Twining - Cambridge
1st year studying towards a Master of Science. Paula has a passion
for biology, oceanography and freshwater systems. Recently 3rd at world
indoor rowing champs. She has been a member of the NZ rowing team since
1999 and in 2004 placed 4th in the womens single sculls at the world
university rowing champs.
Michael Bill - Morrinsville
Currently studying towards a BMS. 2004- 3rd place in NZ junior open.
Top 8 at Australian Junior Tri Series. member of NZ junior and Senior
team and Waikato Mens. Current squash grade is A2.
Gabrielle Rogers - Hawkes Bay
Gabrielle Rogers is currently in her final year studying towards a Bachelor of Sport and Leisure degree. She has been a member of the NZU21 Rowing Academy for two consecutive years. At the NZ National Champs this year she finished first in the U21 pairs event and second in the premier eight. She aims to compete at the Trans-Tasman Rowing Regatta in July and at the University World’s in Lithuania in August.
Aimee
Whitley - Gisborne
Amiee is a student currently studying towards a Bachelor of Law and
Bachelor of Social Sciences. She is also a top NZ judo rep last year
placing third at the National Champs. She also received a gold and silver
medal at the Auckland International Judo Champs in Auckland. Throughout
her degree Amiee has gained work experience at Woodward Chrisp (a local
law firm in Gisborne) and competed in various Law competitions. She hopes
to become a Crown Prosecutor for New Zealand and aims to represent NZ
in judo at the Commonwealth games and Olympics.
Erin Tolhurst - Auckland
Erin Tolhurst has been a member of the NZ Junior Womens 8+ in 2003/4 competing at the Junior World Rowing Championships. In 2005 she was a member of the NZU21 North Island Rowing Academy that won the Rusty Robertson Trophy in Adelaide at the Youth Cup Regatta. In 2006 Erin was selected as Stroke of the NZ Womens Elite 8+ that is to compete at the World Cup regattas in Europe, culminating in the World Champs to be held in Eton, England. She is studying towards a Bachelor of Management Studies
at the University of Waikato.
Emma Twigg - Napier
Emma has been in the New Zealand Rowing programme since 2003 when she made the New Zealand Junior Womens Eight. In 2004 Emma made the Junior Eight again after winning the U17 and U19 single scull titles at the Maadi Cup for the second year in a row. In 2005 Emma was selected to compete at both the Junior and U23 World Chamipinships in the single scull. She gained 4th place at the U23 Champs in Amsterdam and then went on to win gold at the Junior World Champs in Germany. In 2006 after a successful National Campaign with fellow scholar Erin Tolhurst, Emma has been selected as part of the NZ Elite Womens Eight to compete in World Cup regattas and then at the World Champs in Eton, England. She is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Communication
Studies at Waikato University.
Joshua Powell - Cambridge
Joshua is study towards a Bachelor of Engineering. He was a member
of the Force 3 Waikato Bay of Plenty U18 Soccer side and competes in
the Northern League with Cambridge Club. He aims to complete his Engineering
degree and move on to do a diploma in Finance as well as continue playing
soccer at a high level.
Victoria Brown - Hamilton
Victoria is a current student at the University of Waikato studying
towards a Bachelor of Sport and Leisure and Bachelor of Teaching. She
is a member of the northern Districts Spirit Women's Cricket team and
has been in the NZ womens development squad. Victoria hopes to continue
in Cricket and push for higher honours as well as complete her degree
and teach students at a secondary level.
Ani-Marie Waitai - Blenheim
Ani-Marie is a current student at University who last year completed a Bachelor
of Sport and Leisure Studies and is this year undertaking a graduate diploma in Primary School teaching. Last year she was a member of the Waikato
U21, Waikato Senior Side and Magic Development Squad. Ani-Marie regularly
helps out the Marlborough Netball Development programme by assisting
with various holiday programmes over the summer period.
Kahurangi Waititi
Kahu is studying towards a Bachelor of Arts with Honours, she is majoring
in Screen and Media Studies. Kahu has represented New Zealand and Waikato
Netball at U/21 Level and Waikato at NPC level.
Anna Williamson - Tauranga
Anna has come from Otumoetai College and this year studying towards
a Bachelor of Teaching. She recently returned from the Youth Olympics
where she competed with the 4th placed NZ U20's Women's Volleyball team.
She aims to continue her sporting success in the future by representing
the NZ senior women's team.
Sara Kelly - Taupiri
Sara is new to the University for 2005 and intends to study towards
a Bachelor of Management majoring in Accounting. Last year Sara represented
Netball Waikato at U19 level, she was a sport leader at school and represented
the sporting body on the student council. Sara hopes to continue her
Netball success and believes the scholarship will allow her to do so
and continue with her education.
Janine Betts - Hamilton
Janine is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Arts with Honours
in Theatre Studies. She is heavily involved in local theatre with Musikmakers, Playbox and most recently Slip of the Tongue where she performed the role of Hero for Much Ado About Nothing. Also a keen singer and dancer, Janine has 11 years training in classical ballet and was awarded Honours with Distinction for her 2005 tap examination. Janine also works part time as a speech and drama teacher and hopes to be able to pass on her passion of theatre to other young people.
Thomas
Lane - Hamilton
Tom is studying towards a Bachelor of Law and Social Sciences and
last year was the General Executive of Waikato University Law Student's
Assocation. He is a member of the Eventing New Zealand Weatherbeeta Development
Squad and also in the NZ young rider squad. Tom believes a Hillary Scholarship
will enable him to focus and excel on his sport and study.
