2012 Professorial Inaugural Lecture Series - Professor Tina Besley
9 Oct 2012 6:00 PM
Becoming a global citizen: identity, openness and interculturalismGlobal citizenship is a hot topic for schools, tertiary institutions, transnational companies and non-government organisation, as they world to prepare their people to become members of a global society and economy. State-based forms of global citizenship emphasise social justice, diversity, human rights and sustainable development while corporations emphasise the global marketplace, international management strategy, cultural competencies and business ethics.
In this presentation, Professor Tina Besley looks at the notions of global citizenship, globalisation and cosmopolitanism, and discusses these in relation to youth cultures, openness, and interculturalism and ethnocentrism, and asks the question: is the ‘ideal' of global citizenship really attainable?
