Thomas sees things that others don’t - a plague of green frogs, a hailstorm in summer, tropical fish in the canals of Amsterdam. He’s keeping a diary, The Book of Everything, in which he records all that he sees. One day, he writes his greatest wish: “When I grow up, I’m going to be happy”.
It’s 1951, and to escape an unhappy household with a violent father, Thomas creates a magical world where anything is possible - odd encounters with Jesus, befriending the witch next door and falling in love for the very first time. Eventually he learns what it means to be brave.
Beautifully adapted by Richard Tulloch from the novel by Guus Kuijer, THE BOOK OF EVERYTHING celebrates the limitless power of imagination and of the heart. Mothers, nephews, grandfathers, daughters, cousins, boyfriends, sisters, friends - this is theatre for anyone aged 10 - 110.
Starring an incredible ensemble of leading Kiwi actors including Amanda Billing (Shortland Street), Jennifer Ward-Lealand (Brel), Rima Te Wiata (NZ comedy horror film Housebound), Dan Musgrove (Outrageous Fortune’s hit prequel TV series Westside), Michelle Blundell (Shortland Street), Amanda Tito, Patrick Carroll and Stephen Lovatt (Neighbours).
"I know, I’m raving. I don’t always, not by any means. But this one, I loved." Simon Wilson, METRO MAGAZINE
"One could only wish there were more productions like it. This show is everything." THEATRESCENES
"Probably the best Silo Theatre show I’ve ever seen! Exquisite set, brilliant cast, moving and incredibly funny." AUDIENCE MEMBER
"We are thrilled to be bringing The Book of Everything to Hamilton. It’s incredibly rare that I read a script that has me simultaneously crying and laughing just a few pages in. It’s everything I think theatre should be - wildly theatrical, original, honest, playful and inclusive. It speaks to everyone and I can’t wait for you to see it."
SOPHIE ROBERTS, Director
