Mayhem invites submissions of creative prose and poetry from students, staff and Alumni of the University of Waikato and its partner institutions (Wintec, Waiariki Institute of Technology, Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi).
We now also accept submissions from writers around Aotearoa New Zealand.
All work must be original, previously unpublished, and not submitted for publication elsewhere.
Prose: Short fiction, creative non-fiction or excerpts of longer prose work to a maximum of 5000 words (longer works may be considered). Limit of three prose pieces per submission.
Poetry: Up to three poems per submission.
All submissions must include the author’s name on each page and be formatted in the following:
> 12 pt font
> Times New Roman
> Double spacing
Submissions are accepted by email only.
> Submit via firstname.lastname@example.org with ‘Mayhem Submission’ in
the subject line of your email
> Please attach your submission as a .doc, .docx, or .rtf file
> Please include in the body of your email:
- Your full name and contact details (email, postal address and phone number)
- Your University of Waikato student ID, staff or Alumni details where applicable
- A brief bio (under 50 words)
> Mayhem will confirm submissions have been received via email.
Acceptance for Publication
The Mayhem team will notify contributors via email if work is accepted for publication and may offer any minor editing or copy suggestions.
Mayhem regrets that it is unable to offer payment for contributions at this time.
Mayhem may publish print editions of Mayhem submissions as part of anthologies or stand-alone
issues. Mayhem will make all reasonable efforts to contact contributors for their ongoing support
for publication and contributors may be offered compensation including but not limited to
subsidised copies of print issues.
Copyright for all material Mayhem accepts will remain with the author, however if a work is
subsequently published elsewhere then acknowledgement of the original publication/publisher
must be made.
Mayhem may seek permission to adapt contributors’ works for other genres (e.g. stage
performances such as Mayhem Live, film, audiovisual recordings) and will make every
reasonable attempt to contact contributors for their blessing and participation. Rights remain with
