お年寄りの強盗 robbery by an elderly

[かな]しいニュースを読[]みました。 I read a depressing news report today.

82歳[さい]のおじいさんが、コンビニエンスストアーで強盗[ごうとう]した(= robbery)というのです。新聞[しんぶん]記事[きじ]によると、このおじいさんは9年前[ねんまえ]から生活[せいかつ]保護[ほご]を受[]けていた(= had been on benefits)そうです。そして、最近[さいきん]家賃[やちん] (= rent)を払[はら]わなかったということで、住[]んでいたアパートから追[]い出[]され(oidasu is to force somebody out)ました。それからはホームレスになっていて、何日[なんにち]も何[なに]も食[]べていなかったそうです。 

強盗[ごうとう]したのも食[]べ物[もの]がほしかったから。結局[けっきょく]、お店[みせ]で缶[かん]コーヒーとロールケーキだけ盗[]って(toru is to steal)逃[]げました。でも、82歳[さい]のおじいさんです。すぐに捕[つか]まってしまいました。
 
とても悲[かな]しい現実[げんじつ] (= reality)ですね。。。
 
An 82 yr old man robbed a convenient store in Japan. According to Asahi Shimbun Newspaper, he had been on benefits for the past 9 years. Recently he missed a rent and was forced to be out by the landlord. He became homeless and had not eaten for days.
 
He simply wanted something to eat and then decided to rob the store. He managed to steal a canned coffee and a piece of cake and ran. But as you guess, he was caught immediately.
 
What a sad reality in Japan…
