| 'Alan
Smithee' is the Director's Guild of America's official pseudonym
credited to a film when a director believes that it is too incompetent
or compromised to put on his/her resume. The premise of this mock-documentary
is that a director whose 'real' name is Alan Smithee would be left
with no option but to destroy the master negative of the film itself.
The text is comprised largely of a series of interviews, and attempts
to construct a (heavy-handed) satire of Hollywood. (N.B. Ironically,
the film is credited to Alan Smithee because the actual director,
Arthur Hiller, has disavowed it.) |
