Batteries

(refer also to  Cell phone Batteries)

Lead, Ni-cad, Ni-mh, Lithium, Silver Oxide, Alkaline, Mercury and rechargeable batteries are able to be collected for recycling.

The majority of small batteries are sent to Korea for reclaim, under certified Basel Convention guidelines (this controls the trans-boundary movements of hazardous wastes and their recycling and disposal). Alkaline batteries are currently encapsulated in concrete in New Zealand.

If you have small A, AA, AAA, C or D batteries please place in an internal envelope, address as "Battery Recycling" and place in your mail bag.

If your department has more than 1kg of small batteries for recycling, then email porter@waikato.ac.nz to have them uplifted.

Lead acid batteries from University cars and boats can be recycled also. Please contact John Ireland, Fleet Manager: johnire@waikato.ac.nz
