Law and Management Building

Red Dot Title Graphic  LAW AND MANAGEMENT BUILDING CONSTRUCTION UPDATES

Overview

The University of Waikato is embarking on another major capital works project, a new building on Hillcrest Road to house Faculty of Law and Faculty of Management staff.
The building is due to be completed late 2015.
This new Law and Management building will complete a string of iconic buildings on campus and enable the University of Waikato to continue delivering on the needs of the community.

L-M Building Update
17 December 2015

The Law-Management Building is looking good with the first part of the new building being completed and blessed at a ceremony on 14 December. These areas include the new computer labs at the lowest level, which will replace those in MS6. At level 1 is a foyer area where students can relax, along with the new accommodation for the Management Students Centre, teaching rooms for Corporate and Executive Education, a new fully equipped moot court and various spaces for socialising and meetings.

At street level there is a new entrance for Waikato Management School, an imposing structure to replace the subdued former entry, and a grassed area that doubles as a roof, disguising the building and providing a welcome green space between the two large buildings on either side.

There are links from the current MSB building at three points – on level 0 in between the computer labs, on level 1 leading off the main foyer and near the lower entrance to PwC lecture theatre, and another link on level 1 near the rooms formerly used for Corporate and Executive Education classes.

The furniture for the various rooms is currently being delivered and installed, as are the various teaching and audio-visual aids. The building will be ready in early 2016 for staff and students to occupy the spaces and bring it all to life.

L-M Building Update
8 May 2015

Work on the Law and Management Building is progressing well and is now over half-way through. There are a number of large precast concrete elements that have been installed with more to follow. The sizes of the various spaces are now becoming more apparent and it is evident that the views eastward from the new building are going to be stunning, especially from the upper floors of the Law office area.

Work is back underway after the Christmas break on the Law Management Building site. This photo shows the steel going in for the law building tower block. Up to 45 people are working on the site, and the build is expected to be completed at the end of this year.

WMS Parking Update
17 April 2014

Sewerage works are currently taking place in the staff (Gate 7) carpark below WMS, causing a temporary loss of a number of staff carparks. During this time, some staff may need to park in the general (Gate 10) carpark and walk a bit further to get to their offices. This work is planned to continue until the end of the week beginning 21 April. The contractors are working as quickly and neatly as possible to try to limit the time and extent of the disruption caused by this work.

Fletcher Construction has advised that bulk earthworks for the new Law and Management Building are planned to commence on Wednesday 23 April and will take about five weeks.  During this period trucks will be moving through a portion of the staff carpark to a temporary dumpsite located at the back of the MS6 computer labs. This work will also cause a temporary loss of some 30 staff carparks, which will be clearly identified when the work commences. The close proximity of the dumpsite, however, will allow Fletcher to complete the earthworks much quicker than having had to cart the fill off site.

As this operation will involve heavy vehicles travelling through areas where cars and pedestrians are moving, staff and students are urged to exercise the greatest caution during this period.

If there are any queries regarding this aspect of the construction project, please contact Tony Dicks at tdicks@waikato.ac.nz or on extn 4091.

FMD apologises for any inconvenience caused during this time.

Construction to commence Monday 7 April, Gate 7 to be closed

27 March 2014

Fletcher Construction, which has been awarded the contract to build the Law Management building, will be moving onto the campus to begin siteworks on Monday 7 April.  At this time, Gate 7 will be closed to vehicles and the top two tiers of the WMS carpark (the construction site) will be fenced off.

From 7 April, staff vehicle access to the Gate 7 (Management School) carpark will be via Gate 10 (off Silverdale Road). The new parking layout is shown here.

Visitors to the Management School can still park in a limited number of visitor parks off Hillcrest Road. Alternative short-term parking is available inside Gate 5.

For more information about changes to staff or student parking, contact Security Manager, Ray Hayward at rhayward@waikato.ac.nz.
