CLIMPACTS

The CLIMPACTS programme is funded by the New Zealand Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST). Since the programme's beginning in 1993, it has been implemented by an interdisciplinary, multi-skilled research team, led by the International Global Change Institute (IGCI). The broad goal of the CLIMPACTS programme is to enhance the understandings of the sensitivity of New Zealand's environment and resources to climate variability and change. The CLIMPACTS system is an integrated computer model developed to examine the sensitivity of New Zealand's climate, agricultural and horticultural sectors to climate change and variability. It has the flexibility to allow the user to generate a vast number of climate change scenarios and thus ask a range of "what if" questions about the climate sensitivity of selected sectors.

PUCM: Planning Under Co-operative Mandates

Planning Under Co-operative Mandates (PUCM) is a New Zealand based project funded by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology, though the Public Good Science Fund (FRST-PGSF). The main goal of this research is to better understand the links between environmental policy and outcomes by studying the preparation and implementation of plans produced under the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMAct). The research investigates key environmental planning questions about what makes a good plan and whether good plans make a difference.

Integrated Methods and Models for Assessing Coastal Vulnerability and Adaptation to Climate Change in Pacific Island Countries

The UNEP-GEF funded project is developing the "next generation" of integrated models for assessing the vulnerability and adaptation of small island states to climate variation and change. Case studies are being conducted in Fiji and Cook Islands. The aim is to build capacity in those countries for carrying out such assessments. The project is being conducted by the University of South Pacific (USP) with sub-contracts to IGCI and SPREP. IGCI is mainly responsible for developing the integrated models. One of the new additions will be a generic land use change scenario generator. It is funded by AIACC (Assessments of Impacts and Adaptation to Climate Change).

Capacity Building for Sustainable Community Development in Vietnam

In hill-country areas in Vietnam soil erosion and land degradation are some of the challenges facing communities and local agriculture. This project contributes towards the development of local and community capacity to develop sustainable land-use practices and has had a particular focus on the development of organic agriculture practices.
