Life at Waikato
Studying and living in a new country opens the doors to a lot of new experiences and information.
Waikato University is located in the heartland of New Zealand’s leading scientific and wealth creating region. The Waikato region is a world centre for agri-business and home to more than one quarter of New Zealand’s export business and working scientists.
The University environment is welcoming for students. The large open spaces and facilities next to the campus lakes provide students with the opportunity to enjoy some quiet time or spend time with friends. There are regular Market Days held by the lake and once a week students have the opportunity to enjoy music or other activities organised by the Waikato Student Union.
The Waikato campus is the largest and considered the most beautiful in New Zealand. First-class facilities help students work and play in the relaxed atmosphere.
A variety of amenities are located on campus to assist students such as cafés, banks, a Medical Centre, a pharmacy, a University bookstore, a Scuba Diving shop where scuba lessons are available, and a travel agent. Buses also leave from campus for the city centre and surrounding suburbs every half hour.
Waikato University has the largest sports fields of any university campus, and an impressive indoor recreation centre. The Pavilion, on the sports fields, has two squash courts and adjoining netball and tennis courts. Next to the fields are a 50m outdoor pool and dive pool, which are open from December to March.
Over 50 sporting and cultural clubs are active on campus. Students enjoy the use of an indoor Recreation Centre, the New Place Theatre, games rooms, lounges and cafeterias provided by the Students' Union.
