It is vital that you secure your hotel (or hostel) accommodation as soon as possible if you have not yet arranged for it. It is most inadvisable to try to stay in a hotel on the night of Saturday, 9th July. The competition for hotel beds (because of the rugby union test between the British and Irish Lions and the New Zealand All Blacks) has enabled hotels to charge grossly inflated prices for any accommodation that includes that date. See the tips on accommodation and the links to more general information about Auckland on the Society's website: http://www.waikato.ac.nz/law/anzlhs/
You are advised therefore to arrive on Sunday 10th July. Your bags may be stored at Waipapa marae until the end of the first evening's session if your flight arrival time requires you to travel straight to the opening ceremony from the airport. The airport is about 40 minutes from the city - an expensive taxi fare (unless you are sharing). There is a bus service from the airport to the city and there are shuttle buses as well. Some hotels have courtesy coaches.
EARLY BOOKING FOR THE CONFERENCE WILL BE ESSENTIAL.
The conference is at the end of the period blocked out by the hotels for the
British & Irish Lion's Rugby Union Tour. Rugby is a matter of national
religion for many people in these parts. The last test match is in Auckland
on the day prior to our conference beginning. We expect that we will be able
to get sufficient places for our delegates, but it will have to be on a
first come first served basis and we cannot guarantee any establishment at
this stage. The hotels think that the situation will become much clearer
very soon and it is open to speculation whether all the block bookings made
will in fact materialise.
However, on the bright side, we do have some rooms at the Railway Campus , studios at $90 a room, no breakfast and delegates are welcome to contact us for these, which will be on a first-come first served basis.
A message from the University's Accommodation Office reads:
I also confirm that the Accommodation Office will be pleased to be of
assistance in making the bookings for the delegates and they are welcome to
contact either Ronelle Henning r.henning@auckland.ac.nz or Edna Leask
e.leask@auckland.ac.nz in this connection.
The Langham , Hyatt and Carlton hotels all quote from about $150 - $170 per
Person per night.
Quest on Mount cannot confirm availability at present.
There are rooms available at The Centra and at Kiwi International - Best
Western for about $120 per night Phone + 64 9 379 6487.
There have been a good number of paper abstracts filed. The conference promises to be very good.
