Marie Were - Lecturer

Marie is a descendent of Ngati Manawa (Tuhoe), Ngati Tuara (Te Arawa), and Ngai-te-Rangi.
Marie graduated with a Bachelor of Laws, a Master of Laws, a Postgraduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching and has been admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand. She has practiced as a Legal Executive in the areas of conveyancing, commercial law, and estates law. She has been involved in course design and development for online and distant law courses.
Marie currently teaches Legal Method and is the Programme Co-ordinator for the Diploma in Law. She is researching for a doctoral study in the area of elderly healthcare in elder residential facilities, independent living elders, the whanau, kaumatua healthcare, tikanga Māori relating to whaiora, and the Law.
Marie's further research interests include legal education, online teaching and learning, judicial interpretation of statutory incorporated Māori terms and indigenous law.
