Library of Congress Classification
In this system each title has its own unique classification number (known as the CALL NUMBER), which is a combination of letters and numbers. Items are shelved according to subjects and subdivisions within those subjects.
LC Divisions

| B | Philosophy, Psychology, Religion | P | Language and Literature |
| C - F | History | Q | Science |
| G | Geography, Anthropology | R | Medicine |
| H | Social Sciences | S | Agriculture, Soils |
| J | Political Science | T | Technology |
| K | Law | U | Military Science |
| L | Education | V | Naval Science |
| M | Music | Z | Bibliography, Library Science |
For a more indepth breakdown see the LC Classification Outline.
LC Call Numbers
- Are printed on the spine of each book (or where the spine is too thin, on
the front cover close to the spine)
- Represent the subject of the book
- Indicate exactly where it is held on the shelves
There are many specialist collections which contain a separate LC sequence, so knowing the call number of an item is not enough: You also need to know the location of the item. In the Library catalogue the location is displayed beside or above the call number.
