Green Star Rating
Stamp of approval: University of Waikato Vice-Chancellor Professor Roy Crawford with the five-star certificate handed over by New Zealand Green Building Council Chief Executive Alex Cutler.
In 2010 the Student Centre was awarded a prestigious 5 Green Star rating from the New Zealand Green Building Council, the first five-star project in the Waikato region. It also won the Best Use Of Glass Award in the Window Association of New Zealand's Design Flair Awards held in June 2011.
"Building sustainably demonstrates how the University is investing in the future," says Professor Crawford. "Sustainability is a key driver of this university and the Student Centre is a physical manifestation of how we are applying our core values to benefit students, staff and the wider community."
The 5 Green Star rating recognises the environmental and sustainable features of the Student Centre design, which include photovoltaic panels, self-monitoring lighting and energy efficient heating systems.
