We have retained our online guide for EndNote 9.

What is EndNote?

EndNote is a bibliographic software programme which manages references (citations) you collect from databases or create manually. The programme formats the saved citations in any standard reference format automatically (over 600 reference styles are available). EndNote is also capable of saving fulltext articles (in PDF format and/or in text).

EndNote Issues

If you are upgrading your EndNote version, it is recommended that you uninstall earlier versions. Before you uninstall an older version, you must backup any styles, import filters and connection files that you don't want overwritten.

There is a fix for the problem with APA where an extra comma is inserted in an intext citation, usually when there are many references from the same author, e.g. (2002;,2004). To solve the problem please save the APA new style into your C:\ drive, Program Files/EndNote/Styles, and set that as your normal style.

If you are using Firefox as your browser, the instructions in the EndNote 9 guide will not work exactly as given. Until we write a separate guide, you may prefer to use Internet Explorer.

If downloading from databases with built-in filters creates a .asp file rather than transferring your references directly to EndNote, the solution is to reinstall EndNote.

Tutorials

Subject Librarians run regular EndNote tutorials.

Using the Library Catalogue with EndNote

via a filter: There is a filter for the Library Catalogue. Please use these instructions for loading and using the filter, storing your references in EndNote and copying references to a Word document. (PDF, 2 pages)

via a connection file: If you are working on campus, you may need to use this file to connect to the Library catalogue. If you are off campus, use this file.

Save these files to the Connections files folder. Typically this is within the EndNote directory in your Programs File on your C Drive. (Download the file/s. Then go to your C Drive - Programs File - EndNote - Connections - Save).
