Indexes and Databases
The Library Catalogue lists all the journal titles, both print and electronic, held by the Library but does not list articles and reviews within the journals.
To find articles and reviews you will need to use a journal or newspaper index.
Electronic indexes (databases) are available online through the Databases
link on the Library home page . The Catalogue is integrated with these databases.
Catalogue records provide a links to the electronic version of the journal on
the relevant database. Therefore a search for the journal title, if the title is held here, will return a record that will indicate the location and call number for the journal in print and/or the link to the electronic version of the journal.
Some useful indexes and databases are:
Index to New Zealand Periodicals (NZC, Level 3, Z6962.N515) lists articles, reviews and interviews published in New Zealand journals between 1941 and 1986.
For publications from 1987 to the present use Index New Zealand (INNZ) which is accessible from
Databases and is especially useful for information on contemporary authors who do not yet feature in traditional sources of information.
National Bibliographic Database is available from
Databases. The search interface is similar to the Library Catalogue. Managed by the National Library of New Zealand it includes over 10 million records for New Zealand and overseas resources.
MLA International Bibliography is available from Databases. It indexes literature journals worldwide so will pick up references to New Zealand literature published overseas.
The Times Literary Supplement Centenary Archive, available from
Databases is a good source of book reviews from (1902-1990). Back issues of the TLS (Times Literary Supplement) from 1994 are available online via a journal title search on the Catalogue. Early years (1902-1980) are indexed in a cumulated index (Journals, Level 1, PN2.T583).The Times Index at AN3.T585 covers later years.
