Reference Books
- The dictionaries, directories, encyclopedia and handbooks are a good starting point for your research.
- Use these for background information, a quick understanding of
concepts and to find alternative terms for keyword searching the
Library Catalogue and databases.
- The range of call numbers for material about geology and earth
processes begin at QE, hydrology begins at GB, and climatology begins
at QC.
- Some useful texts include the Periodicals Abbreviations in 2
volumes at Call Number Z6945.A2P4, Encyclopedia Geology, Treatise on
Geochemistry and the Encyclopedia of Soils in the Environment.
The Library Catalogue
- The Library Catalogue
- It is accessible in the Library, and online from:www.waikato.ac.nz/library/
- It is searchable by Author, Title, Keyword and Subject and
lists all the print and online books, journal titles, theses and the
material held in Course Reserves.
- The Catalogue lists only journal titles, not article titles.
- For article titles you need to use the databases listed on the
Databases link from the Library home page.
- When searching for materials on a particular topic, keyword search by:
- linking keywords with the Boolean Operators (AND, OR, NOT) and
- using alternative terms, related terms, synonyms, and truncation to broaden your search.
Keyword Searching on a topic on the Library Catalogue:
- Select Basic Search.
- Type your search terms, select Keyword Boolean from the menu and then click the Search button.
- Use and to join several keywords together to make a search more specific:
- e.g. geology and "new zealand"
- Use or to join keywords to make a search wider:
- e.g. petrology and (sedimentary or igneous)
- Use the truncation symbol ? to broaden your search:
- e.g. volcan? finds records containing the words volcano(es)/volcanic/volcanism etc.
- Use quotation marks around a "keyword phrase":
- If successful, a results screen displaying a list titles will appear.
- To view a full record, click on the title.
- The call number and location and subject headings are displayed on the record.
Subject Searching on the Library Catalogue:
- All Library Catalogue records are given standardised subject headings known as Library of Congress (LC) Subject Headings.
- If you know of a useful book on your topic search for it in the Library Catalogue.
- Note useful subject headings on the record so as to search on these or to
use later in a Keyword Boolean search.
- Type the appropriate subject heading into the search box.
- Select Subject begins with from the menu.
- Click on the Search button.
Searching for University of Waikato theses:
University of Waikato dissertations are not usually held in the Library. For access
to dissertations please check with the appropriate Departmental Administrator.
- Search by the author's name or the title of the thesis, if you know them.
- If you are searching for a thesis by subject use a Keyword Boolean search.
- For example type keywords "university of waikato" and thesis and "earth sciences" into the search box, select Keyword Boolean from the menu, select None from the Limit To menu, click Search.
Searching for a journal title on the Library Catalogue:
- The Catalogue lists all journals, both print and electronic, held by the Library.
- The Catalogue does not list articles within the journals.
- However the Catalogue is integrated with the online journal
databases and a journal title search may provide a link to the
electronic full text version of the article.
- Search for the journal title omitting the initial "a"/"an"/ "the":
- e.g. Type the title: quaternary science review select Title begins with. from the menu, select Journals from the Limit To menu, click Search.
- Ensure that the date range of the journal held electronically or in print includes the volume and issue you require.
- Note the Location and Call number for a print journal so as to find it on the shelf.
- Click on the Electronic Access link in the record to find the journal online via a database.
- Only post-graduate students may borrow journals for a period of two weeks.
- Photocopies of articles may be made.
- Full text electronic articles may be printed, emailed or saved from databases.
- To find references to journal articles you will need to search the databases.

Referencing
Harvard
EndNote
- EndNote is a bibliographic program, which manages the references you have collected during your library research.
- EndNote automatically saves, organises, stores and formats these references into a selected referencing style.
- These references can automatically be inserted into appropriate
places within a WORD document enabling you to cite while you write.
- Simultaneously the references are automatically created in a list of references at the end of this WORD document.
- A hands-on tutorial or one-on-one session on using EndNote is recommended. Contact Jenny McGhee for more information.
- The EndNote program is available in the Science computer labs (F.1.14 and R.1.22) and in the Library.
- A disk enabling you to download EndNote to your home
computer may be loaned overnight from Lending Services. There is a
charge for this.
