CSTER Alerting Services


Current Awareness Tools

  • Using Search Alerts and/or Table of Contents Alerts increases the efficiency of your research, enabling you to automatically keep current with the latest information in your field.
  • Search Alerts and /or Table of Contents Alerts are useful for research that will be conducted over an extended time period.
  • A Search Alert is a saved search that automatically re-runs whenever the database is updated. Details of the latest articles that match your search are then emailed to you.
  • A Table of Contents Alert allows the table of contents of the latest issue of a specified journal to be automatically emailed to you. On some databases the abstracts are included in the email.
  • Search Alerts and Table of Contents Alerts are only available on some databases; the following accessible from LibraryLink Databases provide this functionality:

Search Alerts

Creating a Search Alert:

  • First register to save searches.
  • If you want to run the search on a regular basis, create an alert as follows:
  • Log in or register to the free service if you have not done so before.
  • Perform your search.
  • On the search results' pages click on Search History and then Save History in Web of Science, or Save History in Current Contents Connect.
  • On this Save Search History page, type a name and a description for your search.
  • Tick the Send Me E-mail Alerts box.
  • Select Biblio + Abstract as the email format you wish to receive.
  • Select the frequency (daily, weekly or monthly) from the radio buttons.
  • Click Save.
  • After reviewing the Server Save Confirmation, click on Done.
  • You will receive an email whenever new articles matching your search query are added to the database.

Managing Search Alerts:

  • On the ISI Web of Knowledge homepage click on Open/My Saved Searches.
  • From here you can re-run, renew, modify, delete or ascertain the date when alerts will cease.

Journal Table of Contents Alerts

Creating a Journal Table of Contents Alert:

  • On the ISI Web of Knowledge homepage, log in.
  • Under My Journals List click on the link to Create My Journal List and Table of Contents Alerts.
  • Click on Add More Journals.
  • Browse to the appropriate journal title and click Submit Selections.
  • After reviewing My Selected Journals, click on Done.

Managing Journal Table of Contents Alerts:

  • On the ISI Web of Knowledge homepage, log in.
  • Select Create My Journal List.
  • Click on Add More Journals to create new alerts.
  • Click on Modify Settings to amend or delete your journal alerts.
  • Click on Renew to extend the time period.
  • Click on Done when you are finished.

EBSCO

On LibraryLink type Ebsco into the Find a Database search box. Select Academic Search Premier on which to search.

Types of Alerts: Saved Search Alerts

Search Alerts

Creating a Search Alert:

  • Perform an Advanced Search.
  • Click on Search History/Alerts tab.
  • Click on Save Searches/Alerts and you will be prompted to log into your personal account.
  • Type in your user name and password or register as a new user.
  • In the Save Search History box, type in a search name and description.
  • In the Save Search As select Alert.
  • To select how often the search will be run, select an option from the Frequency drop-down list.
  • From the Articles published within the last drop-down list select an option to limit which articles are searched.
  • In the E-mail Properties select relevant options by clicking on:
  • E-mail Notification/Include query string in e-mail/ E-mail /Address(es).
  • Click Save.

Managing Search Alerts:

  • Click on the Search History/Alerts tab to retrieve alerts, edit and re-run them.

Elsevier ScienceDirect

Types of Alerts: Citation Alerts, Journal Issue Alerts, Saved Searches, and Table of Contents Alerts.

Profile

Creating a Personal User ID and Password:

  • Click on Register.
  • Fill in form details to set up your profile and select a password.
  • Click on My Profile to modify your details, lists and alerts at any time.

Managing Your Profile:

  • To change any of your details including your password click on My Profile.
  • Click on Modify Personal Details and Preferences to make changes.

Citation Alerts

Creating a Citation Alert:

  • Perform a search for an article.
  • Click the Save as Citation link in the green box on the article page.
  • Name your alert and how often you would like to be alerted.
  • You are notified by email when an article you selected is cited by new articles added to the database.
  • The email will include the URL to the article and the full text if available on Elsevier ScienceDirect.

Journal Issue Alerts

Creating a Journal Issue Alerts:

  • Click on My Alerts.
  • Scroll to Journal Issue Alerts and click on Select the Journals.
  • Tick the boxes beside journal titles of interest and click Submit.
  • A list of your selected journal titles appears.
  • You are notified when a new issue of a particular journal is available.

Managing Journal Issue Alerts:

  • Add or delete journal titles at any time by clicking on My Alerts.

Search Alerts

Creating Search Alerts:

  • Perform a search.
  • Click on Save as an E-Mail alert above the list of search results.
  • Name your alert and select how often you would like to be alerted.
  • You are notified by email when new results are retrieved with direct links to these.
  • Save up to 10 Alerts the results of which are accessible for 30 days.
  • Modify your search alert by clicking on My Alerts.

Managing Search Alerts:

  • Click the Alerts button at the top of the page to find your current list of search alerts.
  • Below each listing are links to Most Recent Results, Archive, Modify and Delete.
  • Click on a specific Search Alert to execute the desired option.

ProQuest Databases

Please note that an alerting service is not provided on ERIC via ProQuest.

On LibraryLink click on ProQuest 5000 International and select ProQuest Education Journals and ProQuest Science Journals on which to search.

Search Alerts

Creating Search Alerts:

  • Perform either a Basic or an Advanced Search.
  • On the Results page click on Set Up Alert.
  • Fill in the required information and click Save.
  • An email message is sent to the address you have provided.
  • To activate the alert click on Confirm this email address link in the email.

Managing Search Alerts:

  • Cancel an alert by clicking on Delete this alert link in an an email alert message.
  • When an alert is about to expire, you will be emailed a reminder which will allow you to renew the alert.

Journal Alerts

Creating Journal Alerts:

  • Using Publication Search find your desired journal.
  • Click on the title of the journal on the result's screen.
  • From the publication screen click Set Up Alert.
  • Fill in the required information and click Save.
  • An email message is sent to the address you have provided.
  • To activate the alert click on Confirm this email address link in the email.
