The Map Library
has moved to the south end of Level 3.
Other changes include:
(1) The readers' seats and and carrels in the seating area at the north-west corner of Level 3 have been moved to Level 4.
(2) A patch of shelving at the south end of Level 3 has been dismantled and moved to this seating area.
(3) To enable this to happen, books with call-numbers A to CB245 have been temporarily removed from the stacks and put into cartons.
(4) A few extra bays of shelving will also be put up on Level 3 (for example, at the entry to the floor from the Central Stairs)..
(5) A very small number of books on Level 3 which have been assessed for relegation will be moved to Storage or discarded.
(6) All books on Level 3 will be moved northwards, utilising the re-located and new shelving. When this move is completed, the books temporarily stored in cartons will be put back onto the shelves.
At the same time that all this is happening, the electrical engineering firm Ward Chandler will be installing new sensor-controlled stack and seating lighting on Level 3. This lighting, which is similar to the trial lighting that has been in the Level 3 stacks near the Admin offices for some while, is designed to make substantial power savings for the University. The work will involve construction of scaffolding above the shelving stacks, and installation of the new lighting is expected to take at least four weeks.
Please note that none of the above affects the New Zealand Collection. However, when the building alterations currently taking place in Acquisitions / Collection Management are completed, alterations will be undertaken in the New Zealand Collection. These alterations will require temporary move of the Glass Case (rare books) collection, and re-location of the NZC Librarian, EDA PCs and the Ballantrae Collection, etc. The alterations are intended to provide extra space for NZC Library staff, to double the space of the Glass Case collection, and to provide for a small seminar/teaching room.
If there are any queries about any of this work, please contact Tony Millett.

To prepare for this, there will be a number of moves taking place on Level 3 between 21 November and Christmas:
(1) The readers' seats and and carrels in the seating area at the north-west corner of Level 3 will be moved to Level 4.
(2) A patch of shelving at the south end of Level 3 will be dismantled and moved to this seating area.
(3) To enable this to happen, books with call-numbers A to CB245 will be temporarily removed from the stacks and put into cartons.

is now available online. The Index was compiled by New Zealand Collection staff.
The Index was initiated by a former New Zealand Collection staff member Marie Ward who did most of the indexing of the Te Ao Hou volumes. In 1990 Marie resigned and handed the work on to a then new staff member, Kay Young (currently Acting Information Access Manager). Kay then completed the indexing of Te Ao Hou and then added Te Maori and Te Kaunihera Maori: New Zealand Maori Council journal. She then spent a considerable amount of time rearranging the subject and section headings. Over its long gestation period, there have been many changes. Original subject headings were changed e.g. Myths and legends became Traditions and legends. Kay changed the scope and went back and completed the indexing of minor obituaries and smaller articles/ pieces.
