What is Borrow Direct?
University of Waikato staff and students can borrow books from other participating
libraries via the library Catalogue. Borrow Direct is a free service offered
by the Library Consortium of New Zealand (LCoNZ). Current LCoNZ members
are:
- AUT University
- University of Otago
- University of Waikato
- Victoria University of Wellington
Borrow Direct requests are made online via the Library Catalogue. You can pick up your requested items at any of the LCoNZ libraries. You can track the progress of your request in My Details, under 'Request Information'. When the item arrives, the library will notify you by email to the address provided in your library record. The item will be held at the Issue Desk for 6 days.
The owning library determines which items can be borrowed. Generally reference, journals, special collections, AV (CDs, DVDs and Videos) and reserve materials are excluded.
If you cannot get the item you need through Borrow Direct, make an Interloan request for the item.
Questions related to Borrow Direct should be directed to the Lending Services Team.
Finding Items
Check the Waikato Library Catalogue first. If we hold the item, borrow or recall it locally rather than using Borrow Direct.
From the Library Catalogue, select 'Search Other Libraries' then select one or more LCoNZ catalogues to search (hold down the [Ctrl] key to select more than one), and click 'Connect'. You can then conduct a Basic or Guided Search as you normally would in the Library Catalogue.
Click on the title or author name of an item to view the Full Record. If the Status of the item is 'Available' or 'Just Returned', you can request it.
Requesting Items
Click on the 'Request Item' button at the top of the page. Select the request type Borrow Direct. You will then be prompted to complete the request form:
- If multiple copies are available, you can select a specific library and copy.
- Choose the location and library you want to collect the item from.
- 'Submit Request' to confirm the request.
If you have any problems with this process, contact the library's Lending Services Team.
To place a further request, go back to the Title List and repeat these steps or choose 'New Search' to start again.
If you are using a public computer, remember to Logout to protect your user account.
Tracking Requests
You can cancel your requests at any time. Login to My Details, check the items you no longer require and select 'Cancel Requests'.
Borrowing Terms
Items may be borrowed for 14 days for undergraduates and 28 days for staff and graduate students.
The loan period may be reduced if an item is requested by another borrower from the owning library. A recall notice will be emailed to you advising of the new due date.
Returning Items
Borrow Direct material can be returned to any LCoNZ library. Once checked in at a participating library, you are no longer responsible for the item.
Renewing Items
You must renew items before the Due Date. Borrow Direct items may be renewed twice unless recalled by another borrower. You can see and renew the items you have borrowed in My Details. Once an item has been renewed, the status will change to 'renewed', followed by the new due date. If the item cannot be renewed, the status will display as 'Not Renewed'.
Library staff are unable to view or renew Borrow Direct items at the desk. This must be done online.
Fines Payments
Return or renew items before the due date to prevent fines. Borrow Direct fines must be paid to the library that the item belongs to (NOT the University of Waikato Library).
- $0.50 per day for overdue items
- $3.00 per day for overdue recalls
