Description

Course Reserve

is a collection of materials that ensures students have access to required reading for University papers. These materials may be books in heavy demand, articles from journals, lecturers' personal copies of books, lecture notes and other documents provided by lecturers. e-Course Reserve provides online access to journal articles and book chapters.

Material is placed on course reserve by academic staff members or at the discretion of library staff. Material usually remains in the collection only for the period it is in high demand.

Borrowing Policy

  • One item may be borrowed at a time.
  • The usual loan period for books, uncats and folders is two hours.
  • Students are able to book course reserve items for later in the same day, or the following day.
  • Loan periods for booked items may be reduced to one hour if there is high demand for the item.
  • Usage statistics are sent to Academic Staff at the end of the semester. This enables them to consider which items to place in the Course Reserve Collection in the future

Locations

At the Hamilton Campus there are two Course Reserve collections.  These are located:

  • At the Lending Desk on level 2 of the Central Library (this now incorporates the Law Course Reserve collection)
  • At the Lending Desk in the Education Library

At the Tauranga Campus the Course Reserve collections are held:

  • At the Windermere Library for courses taught on the Windermere campus
  • At the Bongard Library for courses taught in the city

Putting Items in the Course Reserve Collections

Requests for books to go into the Course Reserve Collection may be made in two ways:

  1. By using the online Course Reserve Form.
  2. By completing and submitting the white form "Course Reserve requests for books and lecturers' personal copies" to the Library. This form is available from departmental secretaries or at the Lending Desk on level 2 of the Library. This form can also be used for lecturers' personal copies of books. Academic Staff should be aware that there is a risk of damage to personal copies due to heavy use by students.

Requests for photocopied material

Wherever possible, required or recommended class readings should be made available via Moodle. However, in cases where this cannot be done, requests can be made by completing the yellow form "Request for photocopied material to be made Course Reserve" or downloading the printable form. This form needs to be filled in to state that the material has been photocopied in compliance with the copyright licence agreed between the University and Copyright Licensing Ltd. Material cannot be placed onto Course Reserve until this form has been received. Please note that due to changes in Copyright Law, we cannot place photocopied material on Course Reserve unless you are the copyright owner of the original work, or have permission from the copyright owner. However in many cases we can put electronic versions of this material into the Course Reserve collection as e-items.

Requests for e-items [Requests must comply with Copyright Regulations] may be made:

Processing Time

Please provide two weeks notice before items are needed for Course Reserve. Items held by the Library may be on loan and need to be recalled. Library staff will make every endeavour to place items in the Course Reserve Collections quickly - at busy times there may be delays. We will process lists in the order they are received. Where items need to be urgently placed in the Course Reserve Collection, bringing these items to the Lending Desk will speed up the process.

Ordering Items for Course Reserve Collections

If an item shows as 'on order' on the catalogue, please place a request as you would for an item already held. The Library will arrange for it to be processed as a priority and placed on Course Reserve.

If there is no record on the catalogue for an item, please email the Monographs Team of the Library (or phone  extn 8623) to arrange for it to be ordered.

e-Course Reserve

Electronic access to journal articles and book chapters is available via the Library catalogue through e-Course Reserve and provides access to high demand material 24/7 where students have access to computers outside the Library.

Academic staff can send PDF files of required material, in line with copyright regulations, to Lending staff by completing either:

Please contact the staff below for further information.
