Equipment and Facilities
The Library provides a wide range of equipment and study spaces to ensure that you can use various media from our collections and also have the facilities to study, read and prepare assignments.
After Hours Book Returns
Books can be returned to the After Hours slot at the end of the Student Centre Foyer, near the Lift.
Remember Education library books can also be returned to the Central Library and vice versa. However there is no after hours return in Education unless you have swipe card access to the 24 hour Education computer labs, in which case books can be returned through the slot in the foyer, just outside the Library entrance.
Computers and Laptops
There are approximately 80 computers in the Student Centre and 13 computers in the Education Library available for preparing assignments or accessing the Internet, Library eResources or using email.
You will need a University of Waikato computer account to use these computers.
Once you have enrolled you will need to set up your internet access – there are machines in the Student Centre and at the Education Library where you can do this. You can also add money to your Internet, photocopying and printing accounts at these registration and pay stations.
The Student Centre Computer Availability page will tell you how many computers are in use in each room and how many are currently available. See also:

Computers with Chinese/Japanese/Korean Characters
All the computers in the Student Centre and at the Education Library are set up so that web pages in Chinese, Japanese or Korean may be viewed in Internet Explorer and support for these fonts has been enabled for the Microsoft Office software as well.
Laptops
Laptops can be borrowed from the Student Centre Level 2 Service Desk and the Education Library Lending Desk. The loan period is two hours.
Please do not leave these unattended. Unfortunately, theft can be a problem and you are responsible for the replacement cost of a laptop that is not returned.
Audiovisual Facilities
The Central Library has video players that will play both VHS videocassette tapes and DVDs. Most computers, and the borrowable laptops have DVD drives.
Headphones and portable CD and audiocassette players are available from the Student Centre and Education Library Service Desks. More information about AV material and players is available from the Service Desks.
EndNote
The EndNote referencing software is now installed on many Student Centre and Education Library computers. Endnote connection access to the Library catalogue is available using the "Waikato" Endnote Connection File.
The Library can provide you with EndNote software to install on your personal computer. An annual licence costs $45. Ask for more information at the Service Desks (Distance students please email the Library for information).
Photocopiers, Printers, Scanners
Printers and photocopiers are available on each accessible floor of the Student Centre, and on Level 1 and 2 of the Education Library.
Printing and Photocopying Charges
For information see the ITS Printing Services page or ask at a Service Desk.
Scanners are available on Level 2 of the Student Centre. Students are advised to save scanned images to their Student Home Share or to a USB stick.
There are photocopy machines on each floor of the Student Centre and on Levels 1 and 2 of the Education Library. These are activated by using your university ID card.
For visitors to the Library and Student Centre there is a coin operated photocopier on Level 2. Visitors to the Education Library who need to photocopy material should ask at one of the Education Library Desks.
Microform Readers, Printers and Scanners
Equipment for reading and printing microfilm, microfiche and microcards is available in the Microforms Collection on Level 4 of the Student Centre. A new digital state-of-the-art scanner is available which can be used remotely by distance students and researchers once the film or fiche has been loaded. Please email the Library for more information.
See also more information about the Microforms collection.
Self-Issue Machines
There are several self-issue machines in the Student Centre and one in the Education Library. These machines allow users to issue and renew their own books. Unfortuantely, these machines are not set up to issue audiovisual material or very large books. Please take such items to the Service Desk to be issued or renewed.
Remember that items can be renewed online (before they are due) - see My Account.Group Study Spaces
There are six booths in the Student Centre (three on Level 3 and three on Level 4) suitable for use for 2 - 4 people. These have power for plugging in laptops. Individual students are welcome to use the booths when they are not required by groups.
See Group Rooms page for more information about the availability of rooms in the Student Centre that groups can use.
