Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery
If an item that you need for research or study is not available from the University of Waikato Library collections (including electronic databases) we can usually get it for you from other libraries in New Zealand or overseas, or from commercial document suppliers.

What items can I request?
Journal articles and conference papers
These are usually either electronic or print copies.
Books
Loan conditions are set by the Lending Library and must be followed by you and the University of Waikato Library. Books may be borrowed for one month. Renewals can ofter be requested. Some books may be restricted to use in the Library only.
Theses
Theses may usually be borrowed from other New Zealand universities but must be used in this Library. Theses from overseas are difficult to obtain and may have to be purchased. We can advise you on the best way to obtain an overseas thesis.
Who can use Interlibrary Loan services?
The Interlibrary Loan service is available to all staff and currently enrolled students of the University of Waikato.
How do I request an Interlibrary Loan?
You can now request your interlibrary loans through ZPORTAL Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Requests. This system allows you to request items that we do not hold and check the progress of your requests online.
To use ZPORTAL:
- Login using your University of Waikato username and password
- Search for
your book or journal title.
- Once you have found the item you require click on ‘Get It’
- Fill in the part details for a journal article, conference paper or
book chapter
- Select your Pick Up location
- Click on Submit
- You can track your request using the Request Number (ILL No.)
How long will It take?
Please place your requests in plenty of time. Allow two weeks for delivery. Generally books will take longer to arrive than articles. The accuracy and quality of your reference is important and will help us process your request quickly.
Will there be any charges associated with Interlibrary Loans?
- The Library will meet the costs of standard requests.
- If a request exceeds this, you will be contacted before we proceed.

- Take priority over all other requests.
- Incur a non-refundable fee of $20, plus any other urgent fee charged by the supplying library or commercial source.
- Must have your authorisation including a method of payment.
- Need to be arranged with the Interlibrary Services Team.
- The Library will pay the standard interlibrary loan charge.
Are there any copyright restrictions on items?
- No more than one article may be obtained from one issue of one journal
at a time, or two articles if they are on the same topic.
- Requests must be for research, private study, or teaching purposes only.
Where can I pick up my Interlibrary Loan?
Staff:
- Articles can be picked up from within ZPORTAL, attached to your Interlibrary Loan Request, as a PDF if received electronically.
- Books will be sent through the internal mail.
- Theses and reference material must be collected in person from the Customer Service Desks of the Central or Education Libraries.
Students:
- Articles can be picked up from within ZPortal, attached to your Interlibrary Loan Request, as a PDF is received electronically.
- Books and theses must be collected in person from the Customer Service Desks of the Central or Education Libraries.
Returned Interloans
- When you have finished using books or theses they should be returned to the Customer Service Desks of the Central or Education Libraries.
