Wise Types of sources

Once an item has been published or added to an archival collection, the material may be picked up by an indexing and abstracting service. Summaries may be found in reference material such as chapters in textbooks, and reference works such as dictionaries and encyclopaedia and bibliographies may be created.
These are sometimes referred to as tertiary sources

In the case of the Rainbow Warrior incident and nuclear testing in the Pacific, examples of tertiary sources are:

History A summary of events can be found in New Zealand history reference books. The secondary source, Death of the Rainbow Warrior is listed as a source in the Bibliography. Historical Dictionary of
New Zealand History, by Keith Jackson and Alan McRobie,
Auckland, N.Z.: Longman, 1996.
Law/politics The journal article “A dispute of many colours: France, New Zealand and the ‘Rainbow Warrior’ affair”, was picked up by indexing and abstracting service. Index to New Zealand Periodicals (an indexing and abstracting service produced by the National Library of New Zealand). In print in 1986, online since 1987.
Science The peer-reviewed journal article, “The use of nuclear methods for the examination of coral samples from Mururoa Atoll for plutonium content”, was picked up by an indexing and abstracting service Chemical Abstracts and Elsevier ScienceDirect (indexing and abstracting services - available in print and electronic format)
