Pacific students get boost to study
Three University of Waikato students started their first year of study on a good note after being awarded a significant scholarship that covers their fees.
Kristoffer Lavasi’i, Bridget Mettrick and Dionne Treadaway received the Edna Money Future Pacific Leaders’ Scholarship from the University of Waikato – a scholarship that provides support for Pacific students to achieve academically and develop their leadership skills through a tailored leadership and personal development programme.
$1 million bequest
The scholarship, worth $6000 a year for up to three years, is given to students of Pacific descent who excel academically and demonstrate significant leadership potential.
It was established from a $1 million bequest by the late Morrinsville farmer and accountant Edna Money, who passed away in 2013 aged 94.
A proud moment
Dionne, former Head Girl of Tokoroa High School, says it was a pleasant surprise when she found out she’d been awarded the scholarship.
“I was overwhelmed when I found out I received it, and my family were really proud, especially my mum.”
Dionne is studying towards a Bachelor of Sport and Leisure Studies at Waikato.
Using musical talents to teach
Fellow scholarship recipient Bridget Mettrick, a former prefect at St Mary’s College in Wellington, is studying towards a Bachelor of Teaching (Primary).
She says her family was also excited to find out about her scholarship success.
“My family were so excited and they just ran up and hugged me,” she says.
As a musician, Bridget hopes to combine her talents with her teaching degree.
“I sing, play guitar, the ukulele and other instruments as well,” she says. “I love music and I hope to use those skills as a teacher when I finish my degree.”
Ngaruawahia local and former Hamilton Boys’ High student Kristoffer Lavasi’i is studying towards a Bachelor of Social Sciences.
Applications for the Edna Money Future Pacific Leaders’ Scholarship close 31 August. More information about the scholarship and how to apply can be found on the University’s website.
