University of Waikato alumna Komal Mistry has been named the Eagle Technology & IMNZ Young Executive of the Year at the Deloitte Top 200 awards for 2017 – an annual event that recognises business excellence and leadership across 10 award categories.

“It's a privilege to receive this award and I feel very humbled to be recognised," Komal says. "With this award I hope to inspire other young professionals to be the best versions of themselves."

A qualified lawyer and accountant, Komal has a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Management Studies from the University of Waikato, and over the past seven years has held several high-profile finance positions in Auckland with New Zealand dairy giant Fonterra. Komal started at Fonterra as a corporate management accountant – a completely different job from what she does now.

“I currently lead the Fonterra Ventures team which is all about building future revenue streams for Fonterra through organic models, external partnerships and strategic investments.”

Koma says her role can be challenging at times, but she thrives on working alongside a “very talented group of people” and seeing her team achieve results that can often seem out of reach.

"I’m working on projects that I feel very passionate about and I consider myself lucky to be working with a team of exceptional people."

Komal has high praise for the University of Waikato degrees that helped her get where she is today. “I'm very proud to be a Waikato alumna - I really think the Bachelor of Management Studies is a fantastic degree that can lead to so many career opportunities."
