  • Student Centre Opening - Dawn Ceremony
    A dawn blessing ceremony to lift the tapu from the new University of Waikato Student Centre was held early this morning where about 80 guests gathered for the ceremony which saw the unveiling of Aurei – a sculpture specially made to stand at the main entrance of the Student Centre.

  • Student Centre - Official Opening
    The new University of Waikato Student Centre was officially opened in a two-part celebration to mark the occasion. Governor-General Lt Gen the Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae, a Waikato alumnus, officially opened the multifunctional facility. A dawn blessing ceremony was also held today.

  • Bryant Hall Celebrations
    Nearly 200 guests attended a dinner to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Waikato University's Bryant Hall in October. Among attendees were current staff and residents, several past residential staff members, and some of hall’s earliest supporters, including Bryant Hall Trust founding members Dr Norman Kingsbury, Doug Arcus, and Ashley Taylor.

  • Wallace Corporation University of Waikato Blues Awards 2011
    Silver Fern Laura Langman and world rowing champion Nathan Cohen won two of the major awards at the 2011 Wallace Corporation University of Waikato Blues Awards on September 30. This year marked the 40th anniversary of the Blues Awards, with more than 50 Blues Awards being presented to recognise the commitment and achievements of students in either sport or the creative and performing arts.

  • Gallgaher Great Race 2011
    The University of Waikato men's and women's rowing eight crews were too strong for their rivals as they competed in the 2011 Gallagher Great Race. Now in its 10th year, hundreds gathered on the banks of the Waikato River to watch as Waikato took on rowing crews from Cambridge, Melbourne and Sydney universities.

  • Cathy Dewes Honorary Doctorate
    Māori language proponent Cathy Dewes (Te Arawa and Ngāti Porou) was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Waikato. A special presentation was held at Ruamata Marae in Rotorua in front of more than 400 people, including a large delegation from Ngati Porou, Maori academics, educationalists and kura kaupapa children.

  • Distinguished Alumni Awards 2011
    More than 200 guests attended the University of Waikato Distinguished Alumni Awards 2011. Politician Hekia Parata, war historian Dr Chris Pugsley and businessmen Paul Bowker and John Erkkila were this year's recipients. A black-tie dinner hosted by the university’s Chancellor the Rt Hon Jim Bolger and Vice-Chancellor Professor Roy Crawford, was held at the Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts on August 19.

  • Calder & Lawson Gallery - Self-medicating by Yvonne Todd
    Auckland-based artist Yvonne Todd - one of New Zealand's most exciting contemporary photographers - is exhibiting 15 of her works at the Calder & Lawson Gallery, in the Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts. The show, titled Self-medicating features works completed between 2002 and 2010, and focuses on the sometimes strange, creepy and sinister sides everyday things.

  • Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts
    Supporters of Waikato University's Academy of Performing Arts - renamed the Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts - gathered on July 26 to celebrate 10-years since the Academy opened and to welcome on board new principal sponsor Gallagher.

  • Bottle Rocket Competition - OsPEn Lectures
    The OsPEn Lectures is an annual event at the University of Waikato aimed at Year 12 and 13 students who are high achievers in science. About 650 students from Waikato and Bay of Plenty high schools attended over two days, and took time to participate in the bottle rocket competition.

  • Fieldays 2011
    The 43rd National Agricultural Fieldays kicked off today at Hamilton's Mystery Creek. The University of Waikato is once again a strategic partner for the fifth-year running. Check out the latest images from the four-day event, which will be held June 15 - 18.

    The annual first-year Engineering Design Challenge was held June 3 on the university lake, with battery-powered speed boats competing to see who had the best design.

  • New Romantics
    The exhibition New Romantics at the Calder & Lawson Gallery at the University of Waikato explores ideas of danger, mystery and desire. Featuring the work of six contemporary New Zealand artists, the show exposes some of the darker visions alongside those with a more tongue-in-cheek appeal.

    The University of Waikato was once again a proud strategic partner of the 2011 Te Matatini International Māori Performing Arts Festival held in Gisborne from 17-20 February. Te Matatini is a biennial competition that fosters, develops and protects traditional Māori performing arts in the pursuit of excellence.
