scott_base.jpegProfessor Craig Cray has just returned from what was a continuation of the Antarctic Geothermal work he has been doing in Antarctica over the previous few years.

Professor Cary was gone for just over a week to join a four person team which visited the other two (other than Mt. Erebus) geothermal sites in Antarctica to survey and review the protection of these unique sites. Although they flew through Scott Base, they stayed at the Italian base. This shows the great collaboration amongst Antarctic treaty members - it was like a little piece of frozen Italy, especially the food.

A short time lapse video taken at Mt Melbourne, Antarctica, shows the 2800m active geothermal site. While on site, the researchers experienced 50 knot winds with a wind chill below -60 celsius. You can view the time lapse here: http://youtu.be/hykF2Xs6JvY.
