Science Foundation 2012

Science Foundation program runs from January until February and is for students who have University Entrance but require additional tuition in Science or Maths. It covers components of Year 12 and Year 13 science curriculum required for first year science papers. It is also a good refresher programme for mature students needing a background in science for their degree studies. Foundation is offered in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. This course may assist in your application for study in a University Degree programme in 2012.

Biology

This is a catch-up course that provides an introduction to the study of biology. The course covers organic compounds and molecular organization, an introduction to cell theory and the principles of cell division. Biochemistry focuses on energy flow in cells, particularly through the processes of respiration and photosynthesis. An introduction to DNA as the hereditary material and the use of DNA information to control cellular processes is given along with the generation of genetic diversity and the principles of speciation, evolution and population ecology. An introduction to the animal and plant kingdoms is also included. The course is designed to refresh students in biology before entry into BIOL101B Cellular and Molecular Biology and BIOL102A The Biology of Organisms.

Chemistry

This is a catch-up course that provides an introduction to the study of Chemistry. The course is designed to provide an introduction to the study of Chemistry and refresh students in Chemistry before entry into CHEM101A Chemical Concepts and CHEM102B Chemical Change and Organic Compounds.

Physics

This is a catch-up course that provides an introduction to the study of physics. This course is designed to benefit those who are enrolled in the first year level physics courses. The course begins by introducing elementary mathematical material required to understand and manipulate physical formulae. Physics topics covered include: equations of motion, work and energy, heat, waves, light, electricity and magnetism. This course is designed to refresh students in physics before entry into the PHYS100A Exploring Physics and PHYS103B Physics for Scientists and Technologists.

Maths

This catch-up course is intended for students that have enrolled in MATH165 General Mathematics and STAT121 Introduction to Statistical Methods and require a refresher before entry into these papers. This course aims to cover basic mathematical skills, and some algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and calculus.
