Art Crime During Armed Conflict: Continuing Education Summer Course
This course will focus on art crime during times of armed conflict. It will examine particular crimes against art during times of war, ranging over 2000 years, from Classical Antiquity right through to the wars in Iraq/ Afghanistan, placing them in their historical contexts. It will examine the international legal responses to such crimes, and consider aspects of available private law remedies that seek to redress earlier art crimes.
Course Leader: Judge Arthur Tompkins is a District Court Judge in New Zealand. He has lectured in the areas of evidence, advocacy and statutory interpretation, and is an Honorary Lecturer in Te Piringa-Faculty of Law at the University of Waikato. Each year he teaches Art in War at the Summer Masters Programme in International Art Crime and Heritage Protection Studies, offered annually by the Association for Research into Crimes Against Art (www. artcrime.info) in Umbria, Italy.
Background: This is a parallel (non-credit) course conducted by the Faculty of Law open to the public. Participants will enrol through the Centre for Continuing Education and join credit-seeking students, but will not complete assessments. Enrolments may be limited and will be taken on a first-in, first-served basis. If necessary, a waiting list of interested participants will be compiled should the limit need to be enforced.
Course Structure: This course will be taught by lectures, accompanied by Powerpoint presentations, over the five days of the taught section of the course, from 13-17 February. The lectures, (with regular breaks) will take place from 10am till 1pm and from 2.30-5.30 each day, for a total of 25 hours over the whole course.

Demystifying the Arts - PUBLIC ART: A way forward for Hamilton-Conversations on Public Art
The University of Waikato's Centre for Continuing Education presents Demystifying the Arts, a fascinating forum that explores various aspects of the arts in seven dynamic monthly presentations, which are open to the public. The 2011 series is held at the Academy of Performing Arts and focuses on New Zealand Art History, embodying past and present perspectives from celebrated New Zealand artists, historians, writers and filmmakers. Digital Story Telling
This course teaches the craft of digital story telling in a multi media digital format. It allows the creator to develop and convey a unique perspective on life, history or personal circumstance. Participants will be taught the process of building up a story, how to draft and refine it and how to mix various media and vocal tracks together onto the computer presentation as a digital story.
