Certificate of Preparation (CUP)
The Certificate of University Preparation (CUP) is a full-time formal qualification offered jointly by the University of Waikato and
Wintec. It will be taught on the University of Waikato's Hamilton campus in Hillcrest and students will have access to the full range of
services and facilities.
CUP is for students who don't initially meet the entry requirements for study at a New Zealand university, or who need additional academic
preparation. If you left school but have studied to year 13 in New Zealand, or you left school some time ago, then this Certificate programme
can help you make the transition into degree-level study.
You can choose from several streams - there are general streams or the Huarahi streams. Each stream has two compulsory papers in study skills
and critical thinking as well as subject-specific material.
After successfully completing the Certificate, you can then apply for a degree starting in Semester B (July 2010).
This Certificate programme has an orientation session on Friday 26 February 2010 and classes start on Monday 1 March 2010 and finish in mid-June.
For a full-time student, there are up to 15 hours of tuition a week and approximately 18 hours study per week.
The Certificate runs for one semester and, depending on your choice of stream and option papers, there can be up to 18 hours of tuition a week
and up to 18 hours of self-directed study per week. If you enrol in four papers you may be eligible for student loans and allowances.
