Waikato PGSA Mission
Our mission is to represent all postgraduate students at the University of Waikato. We are an independent association. We operate to study the conditions under which we work and make recommendations to enhance the graduate experience, thus enabling the successful progress to degree completion. We lobby to promote the value of the contributions of postgraduate work to the overall university research achievements. We are the University's partners in considering a range of issues pertaining to postgraduate studies at the University of Waikato.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The PGSA (Postgraduate Students Association) are holding the Annual General Meeting on 1st March (the first day of semester) in JG.17 from 11 -12. All members are invited to attend. Its purpose is to formally appoint the new executive for the association for 2010. The PGSA constitution requires that members of the executive are voted in by its members - YOU! So we hope you will be able to attend, ask any questions, meet the proposed executive representatives (as well as other postgraduate students), and cast your vote. In recent years the University of Waikato PGSA has not been a strong body, but this year we have a group of enthusiastic representatives from all the schools and faculties around the university who are keen to represent postgraduate interests within the university, and to initiate regular get-togethers for postgraduate students. Goals for this year include working towards the establishment of a dedicated postgraduate space on campus, where PGs can meet, socialise, hold seminars and workshops etc. We are committed to building a strong and unified postgraduate culture on campus. Please join us for this first meeting of the year to vote in our executive.

University of Waikato – Postgraduate (phD) Workshops 09
University of Waikato – Postgraduate (phD) Workshops 09 The University of Waikato is committed to providing ongoing University-wide support to higher degree postgraduate research students (MPhil, PhD and named doctorates) at key stages during their enrolment through a series of regular, free, practical workshops. All higher degree postgraduate research students are welcome to attend. The workshops are offered in April and will be repeated again in October. Workshop 1 ‘Lifting Off’: An Introduction to Postgraduate Research and Study This first introductory workshop is aimed at recently enrolled higher degree postgraduate research students (within the conditional enrolment stage). It will welcome students to the University and provide an overview of the journey ahead. It will make clear to students what they can expect during their period of candidature, the pathway to confirmed enrolment and the expectations of students and supervisors. In addition, the workshop will model best practice with regard to postgraduate student supervision. Workshop 2 ‘Keeping momentum’: Postgraduate Research and Study This second workshop is intended for those higher degree postgraduate research students who are approximately halfway through their research. This includes students who have recently started or are about to begin drafting their thesis. The objectives of this workshop will be motivational as well as providing tips and practical advice on writing up research. Workshop 3 ‘Finishing Up’: Postgraduate Research and Study This final session is aimed at higher degree postgraduate research students within the final year of submitting their thesis for examination. Topics will include, for example, tips on the final stages of writing, proofreading and editing, preparing for the oral examination, and the ADT database.

Two Events to Consider
Just a quick note about two events:
1. First, we continue to meet informally, each Friday morning, at the Station Cafe, from 10-11am (free tea/coffee!). Our weekly meetings are designed to provide a forum for any and all postgrads. Have an issue that needs to be raised? Looking to meet other postgrads? Want some friendly conversation? Having some difficulty with your research? Come and share with us! All welcome. We usually sit in the front room by the windows overlooking Hillcrest Road (and we'll try and have a sign out!).
2. The Waikato New Settler's Research Group is having it's second meeting on Wed 16th April from 10-11am at the Station Cafe. Discussion at this meeting will focus on Presentation Preparation and Tips. The group is seeking members from all settler communities and also welcomes those doing research on new settler communities.
