Giulia Dondoli

President: Giulia Dondoli

Faculty of Law

Giulia Dondoli is a PhD candidate at Te-Piringa Faculty of Law of the University of Waikato. Her research topic focuses how nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) influence the creation of new human rights norms. Prior coming to New Zealand, she graduated with a Bachelor degree in International Relations and a Master degree in International Studies, both from the University of Siena (Italy).

Samir Harith

Samir came to New Zealand in 2014 to pursue his PhD in Finance in the University of Waikato, Department of Finance. His main research investigates the measurement of risk and return for small, unlisted companies and offers an insight into how risk estimation techniques can be used to enhance business operations. He has a wide range of research interests which include family businesses, entrepreneurship and scholarship of teaching and learning. Outside of the university, he is an avid tramper, dancer and regularly teaches kickboxing classes at a local gym.

Currently doing her first year Masters in Management, Sangeetha moved to New Zealand in January 2017. Prior to moving to New Zealand, she spent a major chunk of her life living and working in Dubai. An avid reader, lover of nature and traveller, she is also a mother to a teenager. Her area of interest and field of specialization is Human Resources.

Amreeta Kunwar

Amreeta Kunwar is currently pursuing second semester of her post graduate degree in Sports & Leisure. Her research is focused on the role sports can play in transforming the youth, developing their skills and shape their future. Her educational qualifications include post-graduation in business management specializing in Marketing & Masters in Commerce. On the professional front, she has worked for 14 years specializing in Sales & Marketing gaining expertise in people & program management. Before moving to NZ, she has experience as a teacher for an Indian government school for 2 years being selected as a fellow by for Teach for India under a CSR program sponsored by corporate. She has played corporate soccer for 7 years and has coached with elite clubs in Mumbai, India. Her entrepreneurial venture is a life coaching academy Neev which helps individuals realize their true potential. At present she is working with multiple top-notch after school programs across Auckland as Sports Coach/Program Assistant. Amreeta loves playing sports, traveling, studying diverse cultures and aspires to make a difference.

Melissa Hempstead

Melissa Hempstead

School of Science

Melissa is a second year PhD student in the School of Science. Her current research on dairy goat welfare investigates methods to improve current disbudding protocol for dairy goat kids. Prior to starting her PhD she was a secondary school biology and science teacher and has taught in England and in Auckland. Her research interests include animal behaviour and physiology, pain and pain responses, methods of disbudding, animal husbandry and animal welfare.

Sunita Basnet

Sunita Basnet

Sunita Basnet came to New Zealand in 2014 to pursue her PhD in the Geography programme at the University of Waikato. Her current research investigates place-based experiences and feelings of (not) belonging amongst former Bhutanese refugees especially women and girls in New Zealand. Her area of interest includes qualitative methods, gender issues, activism, migrants and refugees studies, home spaces, identity and belonging. Apart from her studies, she also involved in number of other activities such as tutoring, note-taking, research assistance and TEDxRuakura2016 event organiser.

Halimah Jamal Mohinitheen

Halimah Jamal Mohinitheen

Faculty of Education

Halimah Ilavarasi is a first year PhD student from Singapore. She is currently researching on children's empathy development towards animals in different socio-cultural contexts. Halimah's area of interests include issues of social justice, child development and veganism. When she is not busy with her studies, is a full-time mother to a three year old toddler.

Brendan Sheridan

Brendan Sheridan

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Brendan is a PhD student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. His research entails examining fictional (film, novel, and theatre) representations of the New Zealand Land Wars and how the historical and fictional representations interact over time. He has a number of other research interests including post-colonial narratives, folklore, fantasy literature and global history. His non-academic interests include rugby, kayaking, reading, films, and is a private tutor/esol teacher.

Carlos Romero Villarreal

School of Engineering

Carlos is a PhD student in the School of Engineering. He came to New Zealand in 2016, after finishing his bachelor and master’s studies in Spain. His research is focused on increasing the lifetime of affordable titanium alloys under cyclic loads. He is interested in aerospace, mechanical and materials engineering, especially in the fields of processing and mechanical behaviour of structural materials and biomaterials.

Mauricio Kimura

Faculty of Law

Mauricio came to NZ to fulfil two desires: moving abroad and changing careers from lawyering to academia. As a lawyer, he spent the last 20 years in law firms and corporate legal departments, like IBM and CBS. Currently enrolled as first year (2017) Ph.D. candidate at Te Piringa Faculty of Law, researching about legal personality and liability for Artificial Intelligent agents. Previously earned his LL.M degree from The George Washington University Law School, in Washington DC and his LL.B from Sao Bernardo do Campo School of Law, Brazil. Hobbies are running, reading and judo. Married and very engaging father of 3 little boys. Lived in US, Europe, and Japan. Fluent speaker of Portuguese and Spanish. Born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
