General Staff Day 2014

text

The 2014 General Staff Professional Development Day was held on Friday 28 November from 1.00 to 4.30 in L.G.1.

There were three core themes which we explored: spot

  1. How do we ensure customer service is a University of Waikato point of difference?
  2. How do we become effective advocates for the University of Waikato?
  3. How do we make sure general staff are appropriately appreciated for their efforts?

We designed the event to be highly participative and entertaining. There were spot prizes, tearoom discussion groups, skits, speed networking and more. The draw for a Farmers' voucher was won by Jamie Ross from ITS. We had 160 registrations for the event.

We developed two cautionary skits for the event (the scripts were written by the very clever, and award winning playwright, Renee Boyer). You are welcome to use this these as part of local customer service training.

View the first video skit. It looks at the need for everyone to develop effective customer service skills.

View the second video skit. It considers effective advocacy for the University.

We also ran a Twitter stream for the event, You can view a screen capture of the tweets here.

95 participants completed the evaluation form and the following quantitative responses were provided:

1. Following General Staff Day I now plan to incorporate more customer services in my role at the University
Strongly Agree Agree Neutral Disagree Strongly Disagree
47 39 5 1 3
2. I now understand the part I can play in helping better promote the University
Strongly Agree Agree Neutral Disagree Strongly Disagree
53 35 5 1 1
3. I found General Staff Day 2014 enjoyable
Strongly Agree Agree Neutral Disagree Strongly Disagree
60 31 2   2

There were many suggestions for how the event might be improved which the organising committee will take account of when planning the 2015 event which will be held on 11 November 2015 from 1.00 to 4.30.

Top Ways General Staff Would Like to be Appreciated

Participants were asked to suggest ways in which general staff would like to be appreciated. We have compiled the following list from the sticky notes handed in and tweets received on the day. See the archive to find a copy of the twitter board from the day, along with links to the two video skits.

  1. Being thanked (publicly)
  2. Having successes celebrated
  3. More support and opportunities for professional development
  4. Opportunity for flexible working hours
  5. Change name from "General" to something more appropriate
  6. Being nominated for a staff award

We will be looking at ways these suggestions might be implemented in 2015, including an investigation around the collective name for "general" staff, sharing the feedback with line managers, and promoting ways in which achievements can be recognised and celebrated.
