The Welcoming Process for New Staff
The University views the core values of manaakitanga (hospitality) and whanaungatanga (community) as essential to the way we lead and manage staff and these are reflected in a strong sense of belonging and common purpose coupled with people friendly processes and practices. These pages have been developed by the Professional and Organisational Development Unit to support new staff and their managers in the important process of induction.
From a professional development viewpoint we refer to induction in the wider sense of making a new staff member feel welcome and assisting them to understand and adjust to a new environment and their new role. Through induction we hope that new staff will become fully productive more quickly and gain a better understanding of the requirements of their positions.
While some centrally provided induction takes place, which all new staff are expected to attend (Introductory Session and Kanohi ki te Kanohi), it must be recognised that most of the process occurs at a local level, usually on the job. These pages have been designed to help identify best practice and encourage a more systematic approach.
All new staff (on greater than two year appointments) are expected to have a personal induction programme, developed in collaboration with their line manager, so should select the information link on the right for further information. This may also be useful for prospective staff or newly appointed staff who have not yet commenced employment. Line managers should select the relevant link on the right for information and resources.
