Parents on Campus Peer Mentoring Group
The idea of a University of Waikato peer mentoring group for working parents came out of informal discussions with staff who talked of their struggles with the dual role of being a parent and in paid employment. The themes were common, particularly around guilt and conflicting loyalties – yet many felt “alone” in their attempts to balance parenting and work obligations.
When returning to the workforce, parents no longer have easy-access to community parental support groups and they have additional concerns around the job, developing a good work-life balance, and how to continue building a meaningful career. “The major stresses of being a working [parent] remain lack of time, and a feeling of guilt, due to perceived neglect of the parenting role".
The aim of this peer mentoring group is to bring together the collective wisdom of parents on campus to provide an accessible network of support.
The group is currently developing further resources. Please check back soon for a link to new content. In the meantime, you may email the group at firstname.lastname@example.org to stay up to date with upcoming get-togethers or for further information.
