Brian Smith Memorial 499/599 Scholarship

The closing date is 31 March and August each year.

The Brian Smith Memorial 499/599 Scholarship was established in 1999 by the Waikato Management School in memory of Professor BV Smith, Director of Undergraduate Studies from 1991 to 1998. The purpose of the award is to enable a 499/599 student to undertake research in a business situation. The research conducted will be towards their 499 or 599 Report of an Investigation paper.

Energy Education Trust Undergraduate Scholarship

The Energy Education Trust Undergraduate Scholarship was established by the Energy Education Trust of New Zealand to assist students to undertake full-time study in the fields of science, economics or engineering and related fields but with a specific interest in energy as it relates to the energy needs of New Zealand.

Fisher and Paykel Healthcare Scholarship in Physics

This scholarship was established in 2003 by the Dept of Physics and Electronic Engineering at the University of Waikato. The scholarship is funded by Fisher and Paykel Healthcare. The intention of the award is to encourage talented students to study theoretical physics and/or biophysics at Waikato University. The scholarships are aimed at undergraduates about to enter their second or third year towards a BSc with a major in Physics.

Gemini Trust Disability Scholarship

Value : $2,000 (changed from time to time)

The scholarship is awarded to one or more individual physically disabled student(s) who have completed at least one year of undergraduate university study.

The selection criteria will be based on academic merit and individual physical disability needs faced by the applicants. The successful applicant(s) may be intending to study part-time or full-time and must be either a New Zealand citizen or be a permanent resident of New Zealand.

Bryant Residential Scholarship

Two rounds each year - 31 March and 31 October.

The DV Bryant Trust established Bryant Hall on land leased from the University of Waikato in 1971, as a hall of residence for students of the region who were attending the university. Since its inception, Bryant Hall has provided a supportive residential environment for first year students and has also provided accommodation for a smaller number of senior undergraduate and graduate students who provided tutorial assistance and developed community activities to enrich the academic, cultural and social life of the hall.

From 2004, Bryant Hall has been owned and operated by The University of Waikato, but the commitment of the DV Bryant Trust to providing opportunities for the academic development of students in the Waikato region continues in the form of the Bryant Residential Scholarships.

The scholarship is offered to students at The University of Waikato seeking to live in a university hall of residence on campus, whose financial circumstances are severely constrained or for whom there are other special circumstances which would make such an experience a significant means of enhancing their academic success. Applicants must be enrolled in full-time study in an undergraduate degree for the first time in the year of tenure, and commence study in the first semester of that year.

Rotary Club of Te Awamutu Centennial Scholarship

This scholarship has been made available by the Rotary Club of Te Awamutu in recognition of the centennial of Rotary International, with the intention to support students from the Te Awamutu area to progress their undergraduate study at The University of Waikato.

Applications will be open to students enrolled in the University of Waikato who completed a first year of study for an undergraduate degree who will be enrolling as a full-time student in further papers principally at second-year level towards any undergraduate degree being offered by the University.

Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents, and have either resided in or have some demonstrable commitment to Te Awamutu and its environs.

Tau Rua Mano Undergraduate Scholarship

The Tau Rua Mano Undergraduate Scholarship was established in 1999 by the School of Maori and Pacific Development with the first scholarships awarded in 2000. The scholarship is intended to assist students to undertake full-time study at any level, for a Bachelor's degree in the School of Maori and Pacific Development.

The scholarship is available only to students who will be undertaking their undergraduate study in the School of Maori and Pacific Development at the University of Waikato. The Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit, personal character, and involvement in cultural, academic, and community life.

Te Tohu Paetahi Entrance Scholarship

The purpose of the School of Maori and Pacific Development’s Te Tohu Paetahi Entrance Scholarship is to assist candidates enrolling for the first time at the University of Waikato in Hamilton and / or selected for the first year of the Te Tohu Paetahi programme on a full-time basis. The Te Tohu Paetahi programme is available in the Hukatai stream within the Bachelor of Arts degree and the Bachelor of Maori and Pacific Development degree in the School of Maori and Pacific Development. Please refer to the University of Waikato Calendar for more details.

Candidates for the Scholarship must be undertaking full-time study, that is in the Hukatai stream within the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Maori and Pacific Development in the School of Maori and Pacific Development at The University of Waikato.

Society of Petroleum Engineers Scholarship

This Scholarship was established in 2009 by the Society of Petroleum Engineers. The specific goals of offering the scholarship are to promote student interest in the application of engineering principles to the ongoing development of the oil and gas industry, provide awareness of the petroleum industry in New Zealand and to encourage students to seek career opportunities in New Zealand within the oil and gas industry.

Lee Foundation Grants

The Lee Foundation is a charitable organisation which makes grants to international students who are residents from Malaysia and Singapore, for study at the University of Waikato. The first grants were made available early as 1972.

Applicants must be enrolled at the University of Waikato in Hamilton at the time of application.

Students who apply must have completed their first year of study at the University of Waikato in Hamilton by 30 April, the closing date of the grant, in the year of application.

Applicants must be residents or citizens of Singapore or Malaysia.

Grants are awarded on the basis of above average academic performance.

Anne Shannon Scholarship

This Scholarship was established in 2000 through an endowment by Dr and Mrs Shannon of Hamilton, to provide financial support to an undergraduate student studying in the field of Biological Sciences.

Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents. Candidates must be majoring in Biological Sciences or in a specified programme including a major in Biological Sciences. They must be enrolled in no less than three papers in Biological Sciences in each year of tenure.

Rewi Alley Scholarship in Chinese Studies

Award is offered every second (odd) year, applications close 31 October in the year before tenure.

The Rewi Alley Scholarship in Chinese Studies was established by the Rewi Alley National Committee to mark the occasion of Rewi Alley's birthday and in recognition of his humanitarian and literary work in China over more than 50 years. The scholarship is designed to encourage study and research on China, preferably in New Zealand.

Michael Baldwin Memorial Scholarship

Value : $10,000

This Scholarship is offered every two years with the next available round opening in November 2010.

Michael Baldwin was a staff member at The University of Waikato at the time of his death in 2003. He had taught for a number of years in Papua New Guinea - at the institute currently known as the University of Goroka - before his appointment to the Centre for Foundation Studies at The University of Waikato. This scholarship commemorates Michael's commitment to teaching and to assisting others in their educational endeavours, and was made possible through the generosity of the Baldwin family.


The scholarship is open for application to students who are citizens of South Pacific nations (This does not include New Zealand of Australia). Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate a need for financial support in order to undertake tertiary study.


Candidates must be current or intending students, who will be enrolled in an approved full-time programme of study at The University of Waikato in the year of tenure of the scholarship. There is no restriction on the field of study of the candidate, but preference may be given to candidates who are enrolled in a teacher education programme.
