Animal Ethics Committee

(a standing committee of the Academic Board)

Users of live animals for teaching, research or production of biologically active agents have ethical and legal responsibility for the welfare of their animals. The major legal responsibilities are set down in the Animal Welfare Act 1999 and the Code of Ethical Conduct . The code is administered by the Animal Ethics Committee and applies to all University of Waikato staff and students wherever they are.

All protocols involving teaching and research in which living animals are to be used must be submitted to the Animal Ethics Committee on the appropriate form at least seven days before a regular meeting.   Applicants are required to read the Code of Ethical Conduct and the Good Practice Guide for the Use of Animals in Research, Testing and Teaching.
