Advice from Employers
Some helpful comments from Employers to keep in mind throughout your job searching process:
- We find students haven't thought through all of their achievements from school to the present day, but tend to focus on that year only. They talk themselves down, and although modesty is a fine attribute, it's difficult to learn much about the person.
- Avoid incorrect spelling, using a standard letter for all applications - you really can tell, and using a standard letter but forgetting to change the name of the organisation!
- Students should personalise their covering letter indicating that they are not sending the same letter out to 50 different companies.
- Research the organisation, prepare questions, show enthusiasm.
- Ensure they read up about the company and have questions to ask. Interviewers are impressed by inquisitive questions.
- Students should be aware of global trends and NZ current affairs. To be effective in business, they should have an understanding of government and economic affairs.
- Could give more thought to who they are, what they are good at, and what they have achieved.
- Know what they want out of a career, and how that relates to the organisation they are applying to.
- Think through situations where they have made an impact, or thought outside the square, or learnt from an 'unsuccessful' experience, to back up their claims.
- CVs need to reflect not only academic achievements but achievements in other areas as well, e.g. part-time work, social, sporting, cultural involvement, leadership experience, etc.
- At presentations where students meet informally with employers, they should prepare well. This is their opportunity to sell themselves. Well thought-out questions go down well.
