Department Research
The Department's research programme seeks to address some of the critical development issues confronting Māori, Pacific Islands and Indigenous peoples. The programme interrelates the research interests of staff and students with emerging local development concerns and international indigenous development experiences. Thus, there are three interlinked components to the programme namely: comparative, policy and applications.
Priority Research & Consulting Issues
Currently, the research issues of particular interest to the programme are as follows:
- Nation building and Māori development,
- Appropriate governance structures for self-determined development,
- Conceptualising and operationalising sustainable development,
- Formulating resource inventories/ development indicators,
- Capacity assessment, capacity building, innovative community development initiatives,
- Community governance and management,
- Indigenous knowledge and practices in agriculture and
natural resource
management, - Fostering entrepreneurship, identifying indigenous competitive advantage,
- Impacts of globalisation and processes of disadvantage
for indigenous
peoples, - Special topics in indigenous development, e.g. energy
resources
(geothermal), policy development and public management - Gender and development issues in indigenous communities,
- State policies and indigenous development
