Alternative Arrangements for Examinations and Internal Assessment
Students are expected to be available for their examination as it is part of their paper’s requirements. A student who thinks there is a timetable clash with another examination or with other important life events may be able to apply for special arrangements. If they arrange events that clash with their examination date they may not be eligible for special arrangements. Missing an examination will result in an automatic IC grade.
- Special examination arrangements to sit examinations at another time or another location
If, due to exceptional circumstances beyond their control, students have another important commitment on the date of their examination(s) and cannot sit the examination(s) at the normal scheduled time, or they are unable to sit their examination(s) at the normal scheduled location on the date of their examination(s), students may apply for permission to sit the examination(s) at another time or at another location in New Zealand or overseas.
Arrangements to sit examinations at another time or at another location are granted only in exceptional circumstances, when compelling reasons exist, and where adequate supervision can be arranged. Application forms are available from the Student Centre (Te Manawa)
Special consideration is available to students who are:
(1) prevented from sitting University examinations due to circumstances beyond their control;
(2) seriously impaired in their examination performance due to illness, injury, personal bereavement or any other critical circumstance;
(3) seriously impaired in their preparation for an examination due to an illness or trauma. To make an application under this provision, students must demonstrate that effective preparation for the examination was not possible in the two weeks immediately before it.
The Assessment and Graduation Office is responsible for the special consideration process for formal examinations only. Applications for special consideration must include supporting documentary evidence. For special consideration for impaired performance or missed internal assessment items, students should contact the paper convenor or Department of study.
Special examination arrangements may be provided for students who are unable to sit formal University examinations under normal examination conditions as a result of a permanent physical or learning disability or a temporary physical disability. A special arrangement for this purpose is not considered as taking an easy way out. If students have a disability and are allowed a special arrangement, it will be designed to ensure that equitable examination conditions are provided.
The Assessment and Graduation Office works in conjunction with the Disability Support Service to provide special arrangements for formal examinations. Internal assessment matters can be organised through the Disability Support Service.
