Calculate your EFTS consumption
In the 2010 Budget, the Government introduced a lifetime limit on access to the student loan scheme. The limit for undergraduate study is 7 EFTS (Equivalent Full Time Student), with a further 1 EFTS allowed for postgraduate study and 3 EFTS for doctoral study. You might find this guide useful when calculating your ongoing eligibility for Student Loans.
What are EFTS?
EFTS stands for Equivalent Full Time Student. This is the measure by which all tertiary education providers report student enrolments to the New Zealand government. The EFTS value of a paper indicates what proportion of a normal full-time programme of study the particular paper makes up. At the University of Waikato 1 EFT equates to a student workload of 120 points.
How to calculate your EFTS consumption
If you would like to know how many EFTS you have consumed over your study at the University of Waikato, you can do this in two steps:
- View your academic record on iWaikato to see how many points you have been enrolled in and how many points you passed.
- Convert the points you were enrolled in to EFTS according to the table below.
-
| University of Waikato points | EFTS value |
|---|---|
| 5 points | 0.0417 EFTS |
| 7 points | 0.0625 EFTS |
| 10 points | 0.0833 EFTS |
| 15 points | 0.1250 EFTS |
| 20 points | 0.1667 EFTS |
| 30 points | 0.2500 EFTS |
| 60 points | 0.5000 EFTS |
| 90 points | 0.7500 EFTS |
| 120 points |
1.0000 EFTS |
These conversions cover most papers offered at the University of Waikato; however you may have enrolled in papers of other points/EFTS values. If the points and EFTS and EFTS for your papers are not listed here, contact the Student Information Centre at 0800Waikato or info@waikato.ac.nz for more information.
