You need to know
During the online application process, you'll be asked for the qualification and major subject you intend to study. You'll also be asked to choose the papers you plan to study in your first year so write down the paper names and codes before you start applying.
But remember that you can change your qualification, major and subjects up until you finalise your Enrolment Agreement so you're not committed to your choices at this stage.
Understanding the terms:
Degrees
Degrees are made of papers, similar to high school subjects. Each paper is worth points, and you need to earn a total number of points (by successfully passing each paper) in order to complete your degree and graduate.
Each paper could involve attending a combination of lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions or field trips as well as completing assignments, group projects or exams.
Many degrees require you to choose a set number of papers in one preferred subject, which is known as your major. Often you can decide what to specialise in after you've tasted a range of subjects in your first year. Some other degrees like the Bachelor of Engineering have specified programmes, where the papers are specified to prepare you for a certain career.
You may also have room in your degree to take elective papers. Electives can be from almost any subject in the university, so you can follow your personal interests or broaden your career options.
Waikato University makes it easy to study a broad range of subjects. Whether you’re interested in music and law, or biology and economics, our range of flexible qualifications can make it work for you.
