When Kate Barry heard about a new degree being offered at the University of Waikato, a Bachelor of Media and Creative Technologies, she knew she had found the perfect degree for her.


Please note: There will be no new enrolments in the Design Media major, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or supporting subject from 2017. Students who commenced a major in Design Media in 2016 or prior should consult the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences for advice(wfass@waikato.ac.nz).

In your Design Media studies, you'll grow your creative, critical and analytical skills using a variety of media types. Design is the key driving force in the creative economy which means you'll have no shortage of career opportunities.

The Design Media major comes under the Bachelor of Media and Creative Technologies, so you'll gain all the skills you need to become a qualified professional in the field. The interconnected nature of the programme allows you to freely grow your web design, 3D modelling, television production skills and other interests, in a variety of ways.

By graduation, you'll have skills in computer science, graphic design, creative technologies, screen and media studies, and even in music. You'll have the confidence to work with graphic designers and large media-centric teams to create innovative design experiences.

Design Media at Waikato will equip you with professional skills and give you the benefit of entering the workplace as a unique, creative design specialist.

A Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma are available to graduates who have not included Design Media at an advanced level in their first degree.

Prescriptions for the BMCT(Hons)and MMCT

Design Media is not currently a subject for the BMCT(Hons) or MMCT. However, students who have completed an undergraduate degree with a major in Design Media may enrol in Creative Technologies for the BMCT(Hons) and the MMCT. Design Media is available as a major for the BMCT. Design Media may also be taken as a second major or as a supporting subject within other undergraduate degrees, subject to academic approval of the Faculty or School of Studies in which the student is enrolled.

To complete a major in Design Media, students must gain 120 points above 100 level in Design Media, comprising CGRD224, COMP223, CGRD350, COMP324, COMP325 and either CGRD252 or CGRD353. At the Chairperson’s discretion CGRD224 may be replaced with CGRD241. It is recommended that students intending to major in Design Media include COMP125 and COMP126 in the first year of their programme of study in order to meet prerequisites for study at 200 level and above. In addition, students must complete the compulsory papers for the BMCT degree: CGRD161, CRPC101, SMST101, CRPC301.
