Waikato accounting graduate Emma Haddock is thriving in her new professional career at KPMG in Hamilton, where she works as an analyst.
The former Hastings Girls High School student started a graduate tax/audit role at KPMG in October 2013. This allowed her to continue refining the skills developed during her management internship, which was part of her Bachelor of Management Studies with Honours degree.
“Reporting to a real organisation and applying your knowledge is vital learning for any person going out into the business world,” says Emma. “It pushed me out of my comfort zone and required excellent time management skills.”
During her internship, Emma was tasked with understanding new tax legislation, then using that knowledge to train staff and provide them with learning materials for the future.
She also got the opportunity to work face-to-face with new clients and help them plan for upcoming tax changes.
No day is quite the same for Emma. Whether it’s meeting clients, researching new developments, or tackling client questions, there’s always something challenging and interesting happening.
Emma’s BMS(Hons) degree proved to be essential as she went out into the workforce – not only in terms of technical knowledge, but also the soft skills she had developed through the course of her degree.
“Being exposed to a wide range of commercially focused papers allowed me to have a better appreciation of how I could serve my clients,” she says.
