B Semester Hākinakina
Wednesday 1st October 2008
Māori students from across Waikato University gathered on the lower sports fields to compete in the bi-annual Hākinakina on Wednesday 1 October. Despite the windy weather, there was a good turn out of students from across the campus, and the lower fields were soon ringing out with competitive calls and supportive comments from team mates.
Organised by the office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Māori), Hākinakina has become a staple of many Māori students' calendars. It's a great opportunity for students to see how many other Māori are out and proud around the campus. The competition between the schools definitely comes in second behind the whanaungatanga aspect of the day, although there were great prizes for those that placed.
As with any Māori hui on campus, there was plenty of kai for all involved. Fresh fruit and a tasty sausage sizzle was available all day, thanks to the mean cooking styles of Dean and the boys. Students stocked up on the food between games of netball and touch over four rounds. The much anticipated novelty round went off with a bang, as teams were expected to perform a well known nursery rhyme in different musical genres. Spectators were treated to renditions of "Mary had a Little Lamb" from a choirs perspective and opera versions of "Humpty Dumpty". Each team was marked on creativity, innovation and the 'wow' factor of their performances. Many laughs were had by all as the judges had the unenviable task of picking the best from the worst!
Prizegiving was followed by a closing karakia, and the students were left to either celebrate with their trophies or commeserate with their team. Congratulations to all who participated in Hākinakina 2008.
