Celebrating 150 Years Kīngitanga

On  Tuesday 28th, Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th of October a series of discussions was held at the Academy here on campus to celebrate and acknowledge 150 years of Kīngitanga and was well attended by the wider community over the three nights.

When asked what were some of the hightlights of the 150 Years Kīngitanga series of discussions, event emcee, key member of the project team and lecturer in the School of Māori and Pacific Development, Te Kāhautu Maxwell’s reply was: “everything was a highlight” especially “seeing a big smile on the King’s face”.

Pro Vice Chancellor Māori Professor Linda Tuhiwai Smith also commented that “it was great to see everyone generally engaged and interested in the discussions”.

The event officially began with an opening address by Vice Chancellor Professor Roy Crawford with the support of a karakia by University Kaumātua Rewi Rapana.  Tuesday evening featured the Hon Nanaia Mahuta, Emeritus Professor James Ritchie, Rāhui Papa complimented with entertainment provided by Te Wharekura o Rākaumangamanga.

The launch of ‘Kīngitanga Day’ for 21st April 2009 was also announced by Vice Chancellor Professor Roy Crawford and is set to become a permanent fixture on the University Calendar.  This initiative has been developed with the support of the Vice Chancellors' Committe and the endorsement of King Tūheitia and is consistent with the University’s objective in the Strategic Plan to develop a clear and distinctive identity.

The Wenesday evening session which was facilitated by long time Media Practicioner Wena Harawira included Rt Hon Sir Doug Graham, Charmaine Pountney and Gordon Chesterman. Ngā Taiātea Wharekura entertained the crowd in between discussions.

To conclude the event the final night included panelists Ripeka Evans, Dr Koro Wetere, Haami Piripi, Archie Taiaroa, Professor Pou Temara and rounded off nicely with a performance from top ranking senior Kapa Haka group Opotiki mai Tawhiti.

Former University Kaumātua Dr Hare Puke congratulated the University for organizing and hosting such an auspicious occasion, filled with valuable and enlightening information and encouraged the idea of establishing the sessions as an annual event.
