Whānau support in Science and Engineering
Student welcome and orientation for new students will involve being invited to the University wide Pōwhiri where the coordinator and mentors will be there to meet all newcomers. Tours of the University and School facilities will be available in the afternoon also. There will be advice and support on how to use University systems such as student logon, iwaikato, moodle, and a tour to meet the staff and science facilities of the library.
Orientation Week that occurs in the first week of semester is a great opportunity to meet the Mentor Coordinator and kaitiaki / mentors who will make themselves available for students throughout the first two weeks. Competitions will be run and prizes offered to raise the profile of the unit and make contact and engage with the students.
Māori Info Day will take place in the first cultural hour of the Semester. This day has been organised as a time for all university students to meet one another and meet key support staff and their roles from across the university community.
Student gatherings will take place during each semester offering a forum to mix and mingle with fellow scientists, share information and ideas.
Smaller student gatherings may be targeted at specific student groups such as; graduates, first year students, 2nd /3rd year or subject specific to increase awareness of which students are within each of the related fields.
Guest speakers will be invited to speak to students in both semesters and to workshop specific science skills with the students.
Workshops will be provided throughout the semester that offer help and advice in a non academic area but support the pastoral care and learning of the students. Topics such as; study smart skills, meeting the science librarian and discovering the science library, career planning, CV preparation.
