Te Pūtahi o te Manawa
Whānau support in Science and Engineering
Māori Mentors
A team of successful Kaitiaki / Mentors are available to help you with subject specific areas within your paper. Mentors / Kaitiaki will be given a list of students they are responsible, their first job will be to connect with all the students on their list within the first two weeks in the labs and report their findings back to the Mentor Coordinator. These students have hands on experience and have been there, done that and have succeeded thus far at University.
You can access kaitiaki / mentors via direct email or the Mentor Coordinator. Kaitiaki / Mentors are not tutors but please email the Mentor Coordinator if you wish to access one-on-one tutoring. Kaitiaki / Mentors will be making themselves available in a drop in hour in the Māori resource room.
Science Help
Science help is available to all first year students. Science help is a series of extra help drop in tutorials with paid tutors to give an extra tutorial time to keep on track in your papers. Please email the Mentor Coordinator if you would like to access one-on-one tutoring.
Online support
Online Support via Moodle will be a Te Pūtahi o te Mānawa / Māori Science Support presence. This will provide another forum where students can communicate with kaitiaki / mentors/, the mentor coordinator or as a forum to talk to each other.
Study health check – Study stock take
There comes a time within the academic year where students have to take stock and check that they are on track and are well positioned heading into exams and peak assessment time. The study health check week will involve maintaining contact with the Maori mentors, filling in the study health survey and attending a one on one meeting with the mentor coordinator. Lunches, competitions and prizes will help inspire you to continue on successfully in your papers.
